Heater/air-con has packed up.

Post by Ads4 » Mon Nov 26, 2007 10:10 pm

Zilch. Nada. Nothing. Kaput. I think it's broken. :(
The vents no longer emit an air flow. This has been an intermittent problem for the last week but is now permanent and i now need to drive with a window open to keep the interior from misting up. Has the fan broken or could it be a fuse? Or a whole new heater unit needed? I know nothing (nada. zilch.) about the heating system so would welcome some advice please! :D

Check the fuse first, at the very end of the dash (nearside), the panel has diagram if I remember correctly.

Could also be the brushes on the heater motor but that would get gradually worse over a longer pweriod, new brushes are only around £50 fitted from your local washing machine repairer.

I can't remember if the resistor pack on these is susceptible to failure but that's another cause I guess.

Adam - do you have access to VAG-COM?

Any fault codes should give you a clue to where the problem lies.

Looks like my 'Fresh Air Blower (V2)' is defective then?! New unit required? Trip to the stealers then...

Take the blower motor out from behind the glovebox first, a slightly fiddly job. Once it's out check the motor brushes for excessive wear, if they're worn it's a cheap fix. Shouldn't take you longer than forty minutes to take it out, even less to put it back once you've remembered where all the screws go.

that part number is for the control unit that sits in the centre console..about £570 inc vat..well thats stealer price anyways...
