Cam Belt Change Prices

Post by s4jersey » Wed Nov 21, 2007 7:48 pm

Does anyone know the cost of a cambelt change, for parts and for labour, and also how many hours you are likely to be charged ?

Be interesting to see what other guys have been charged !?

Cheers

Book time (non-audi) is 3.7 hours. This doesn't include water-pump or aux belt etc (stuff you'll probably do at the same time). Parts come in around the £200+ mark so hard pushed to get it much cheaper than £450. Audi prices seem to vary wildly but somewhere in the £800 - 900 without discount. MRC quote £695 when I checked (this includes all moving parts).

Although some people might disagree it isn't rocket science, any competent mechanic (with the right tools - cam lock is essential) can do it. Having said that get it wrong and bye bye car. Some sort of guarantee on the work (however irrational) at least stems the worry...

what ever you do don't just take the cheapest option.. I had the main dealer leave a bolt in the timing covers & write the car off as a result :(

It cost me £580 last year at Dialynx, which included water pump; aux belt; tensioners etc and a 10,000 mile service. That's parts and labour.

The reason for me asking was that I has a cambelt, Aux, Pump, and APR bipipe fitted a couple of months ago, and he has finally sent the bill through and it is £1500 !!!

That also includes fitting a reconditioned ABS ecu.

But I bought and paid for all the parts myself !

which means the guy is certainly taking the piss.

Cheers for the input guys, it will be an interesting conversation I have with him tomorrow.

Not being funny, but this is always the problem with trust, and sorting out bills months later.

They take the pi55 when they do finally send the invoice! I always rather sort out bills/invoice straight away after jobs done.

Hope its a positive outcome.

Samw with me mate, I always pay my mechanic when I collect, but this time he didn't have the bill ready, and he was still supposed to be sorting out a headlight out lamp warning on the dash, so I was waiting for him on that problem, thought he was ordering some parts.

Have also been moving house and been away for work a lot, so just have not had time to go an pester him for the bill.

I just cannot see how he has come to the price but we will see when I go and speak to him today.

Cheers for the input guys

just in case anyone is interested - had the cambelt done by stafford audi. £595, friendly, 4 years warranty on the belt (or 60K) & 2 years on all the other parts (water pump, tensioners, rollers, aux belt etc.)

First time I've been to a dealer for anything & I'm happy. Guy i dealt with said the price was fixed and available for all...

I paid about £250-£300 for all the parts and my labour was around £600 off books.

Yeah I've heard about Audi dealerships being alot cheaper and friendlier outside of London. London Audi dealerships are a rip off. I remember when I first got my car and knew little to nothing about it Lea Valley Audi in Chingford charged me £435 all in to change the driver's side EGT. That is a job I can now do in 15-20 minutes. What a joke. They don't call em Stealers for nothing!
