APR bipipe fitting experience

I noticed that there are now quite a few people here with an APR bipipe and it seems that more people had problems during fitting than not. So in the interests of members who might want to fit one, I thought we could collect experiences in one place.

Mine was a bugger to fit. I took out both headlamps to get access to the IC hoses, but getting the actual bipipe on the throttle body was a real pain in the ass. I had to whack the thing with a rubber mallet to get it to move at all. It took hours and my hands were shredded.

The actual problem was that the right hand bolt started doing up and then came free as the thread in the throttle body stripped. I had a lot of discussion with APR over this and they promised to send me a new longer bolt but never did. I ended up going to a HW store and getting my own, but I couldn't get the right length so ended up with one slightly too long and packed it with a few washers.

Good call Dippy

I selected "easy to fit but had problems", so here's the "specify" bit :-

First off, the installation instructions can be found here : http://www.goapr.com/Audi/support/bipip ... lation.pdf

Easy bits :
Removal (and refitting) of engine cover(!),
throttle body boot,
air intake ducting,
boost sensor and bracket,
headlamp,
DV hoses,

Fiddly but not difficult :
Removal of existing TBB to IC pipes

Very fiddly :
Maneuvering the bipipe into position (step 33 simply says "install bipe, slide the right side in first" - yea right  )
Aligning the bipipe with the throttle body and securing new bolts - they're only just long enough.

Not difficult, but problematic :
removing throttle body bolts - one of mine had to be drilled out.
I over-tightened the bolt which attaches the bracket to the left side (looking from the front) of the bipipe. This bracket also sits over one of the belt covers - result : belt cover sheared off when I started it...!!

Hope this helps. It would be so much easier to install by removing as much from the front of the car as you can, IMHO, at least the bumper.

Mine was a b*stard. (a) getting the TB off of the IM was a complete arse: all 4 bolts holding the TB on were seized and needed smashing off in the end with a hammer and screwdriver! (b) getting the bi-pipe onto the TB was also a PITA - similar to Dippy I had to gently tap the thing into place with a block of wood and a lump hammer (c) also threaded one of the supplied bolts and had to get a longer one (d) getting the 3rd bottom bolt into the adapter was a major arse: the bolt just would not catch into the thread and a lot of f*cking about ensued to get it in.

All in all: a <beep> job that left me with gnarled and blooded hands ... but worth it to get the bi-pipe on.

I Was fitting RS4 ICs at the same time so most of the front end was off so I had no problems, although I selected difficult to fit with no problems, as even with the front end some bits were tricky... ie to get the samco hoses(not very pliable) from the RS4 coolers to over each end at the same time.....

Although I woulnd class it as a "problem" I did have an issue getting the right length bolts. In the end I used my own stainless bolts and spaced out with a couple of washers, but I had all that to hand.... If I hadndt Im sure I would have been cursing and swearing...

fitted 1 last sat ..removal of all parts easy as pie..
fitting bi-pipe easy but getting bottom bolt to line up and start a real pain..
ended up elongating the bottom hole on the bi-pipe just so i could see the hole then recutting the threads in the bottom hole to except the supplied bolt..
once the bolt took hold it was plain sailing..
Advise..before attempting to fit the bottom bolt make sure that you elongate the hole and insure that all threads are clean and except the supplied bolts..
use plenty of WD40 around the O-Rings so they dont tear..
And be carefull not to overtighten the bolts as this will strip the threads holding on the throttle body and cause an air leak...

oh yea, I added small amounts of gasket sealant around the seal rings too, as they looked pretty flimsy....

lol @ Clive, you forgot about the seized bolt on the TB that required the drill from hell to remove it

easy to do mostly getting the pipes in is a bit of a mare, had to use a bit of washing up liquid (only the best fairy) but I moved my throttle position whilst cleaning the inside of the intake. The car ticked over at 1000 until i reset the ecu after some good advice from the site.
