The S4 Avant Rocks!

Post by D10DON » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:25 pm

The story so far:
Decided an S4 Avant was for me, fast, practical, reliable.

Looked through many ads and found a July 2001, mint, 86k, standard, £10,750, last October. FASH and one specialist service, 800 miles ago.

Went to have a look, as described and in the next road to me!!

Bought for £10,250. Did i mention it was light metallic green?!!

The car is faultless, and showing 24.8 mpg av. I give it some when there's space, but when i'm stuck i leave big gaps and drive v. conservative. i reckon 34 mpg on motorway, 20 ish in town.

Have had some great fun in my uber stealth mobile which i will elaborate on later.

The only trouble i've had is logging on here! But i've finally made it, so hi to all S4'ers.

Don.

Welcome! You've brought a great car.

Plenty of great info on this forum, gets quite addictive...

You don't mention where you're from but I would recommend getting yourself to MRC Tuning (Banbury) for a healthcheck if you're close enough, won't go into details here as plenty of topics cover it. Search for "healthcheck". FASH does not mean your car is running as well as it can, believe me!

Porsche Carrera 4 vs S4

Post by D10DON » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:38 pm

One of my mates had an old shape Merc 500. "Bet my cars quicker than yours" he spouted.

Cheerio, i said.

He promptly went out and bought a Porsche 911 Carrera 4 cab.

"Bet my cars quicker than yours now" he spouted.

Cheerio i said.

We've been out on quite a few runs and he is way slower 0-70. He didn't reckon on the extra weight of his 4wd and hard top, he's also a lardy git at 20st. From what i can tell he seems to have a really short 1st gear, 2nd comes in but has no oomph until around 3800 rpm, by that time it's all over. We haven't had the chance to do high speed runs yet, but i think he'll have the edge over 90 mph.

Even funnier, it's got a GT3 bodykit so looks like it should be a rocket ship! Having looked up the stats it's quoted at 6.5 secs for 0-60. How i laughed.!!

Practicality

Post by D10DON » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:44 pm

in November for the 5th i bought a heap of explosives, an incinerator, and the weeks shopping. Popped it all in the boot.

Went to John Lewis in december, bought a nigh 6ft tall lamp, popped the seats down, took it home.

Exige!

Post by D10DON » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:50 pm

Another of my friends has an exige S1. This was always going to be fun!

By the time we had finished our spirited run we couldn't decide whether he should be more embarrased that an Audi estate was all over him, or i should as a car with aound 170bhp was all over me!

For fairness i should add it was slightly damp, and fairly longish straights with a few roundabouts. (B'nell, A322). Of course i have the benefit of all the gizmos, but he's had his 2 yrs.

BMW M5

Post by D10DON » Sat Feb 10, 2007 9:54 pm

Came across an M5, y plate a few weeks ago on the Staines bypass. He wanted to play as did i.

All over him, and quicker to around 80, then he started pulling away, but not a great deal, at a certain speed he backed off and i couldn't resist a flat out fly by!

It seems to me we are a bit lacking top end? Is this the norm?

0-60 in 5.5 is pretty awesome and thats standard!
Check the stats between S4 2.7, S4 4.2 and RS4 2.7 and you'll see that the 2.7 S4 is not beaten by the 'superior' cars in all increments. Some in gear times are way better in the S4 even better than the RS4 as RS4 headline bhp figure is at top end and lower rpm response suffers.
And how did Audi make the new S4 slower than the old one? They did, the old one is close in most cases and whoops it in 5th gear times.
(this is from Audi Driver).
I got a standard size house door in mine and a display cabinet fitted perfectly between the wheel arches.

THE Subaru

Post by D10DON » Sat Feb 10, 2007 10:01 pm

Came up behind a Subaru, don't know which version, a short while ago. He wasn't hanging about so knew i fancied it as i'd come up on him.

It was raining. Clear straight from 60.
That was him gone, took off like a flippin' rocket!. I was in the right gear waiting for him to go, and did he go! No contest!

Got back with him a couple of times on 'bouts, same thing happened.

I peeled off and went and bought a wardrobe and put in the back! Bet you can't do that Mr Subaru!

HI Reserves,

I've got the health check on my list. I'm only down the road in Surbiton, Surrey. I firmly believe i'm running tip top, so i'll wait till the next service, last time i looked that was 13k away!

Seriously though, i'll get an oil service and health check at 6k, so in about 2k's time. I just feel that if you're working the car the oil suffers. Might even think about getting breathed on, but the car is so good standard i'm in two minds. I think i i'll get the brakes done though as i suffer a bit with fade.

Get up to MRC for a health check and a custom remap and if you find Mr Subaru again you could well be looking at him in your rear view mirror!!!

Top tip, get a laptop and get vag-com on there - you can spot all sorts of nasties with it (boost leaks, actual boost v requested boost) - welcome to the forums!

Audis are cheaper than women, and when they finally leave they don't take your kids and half your stuff....
although smack either one about and the police turn up ;-)

some good advice there, don't waste time. perfect example was a friend of mine who bought an S4 just before xmas, we vag-commed it and found a boost problem, checked it for boost leaks and found the TBB split wide open. i replaced it with a spare i had and he couldn't believe the difference, up to that point he thought his was running well.

Agree withg Nickb, mine felt OK after my S3 but VAG COM'd it and found exhaust gas temp sensor fault which was limiting boost, replaced it and WOWOWOWOWOWOOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOOW it was awesome and thats standard - made the poor MPG worthwhile!
I VAG COM mine weekly, like checking the oil.
Replaced a coolant temp sensor thanks to a recent check and hadnt even noticed it was playing up.

Vag Com

Post by D10DON » Sun Feb 11, 2007 12:10 am

Cheers Woody,

I've read a bit about this Vag Com thingy, i guess it's a plug in diagnostics tool.

It would be great to see how it works, and see what it throws up.I've got a lap top.

I'm around most weekends and eves.

Anyone else fancy a quick meet around the Surrey area? Could be your only chance to see a metalic green uber stealth machine!
