Had quite a shock yesterday, had my 6 month oil+plug change done at my local dealers. I knew my front tyres were getting low on tread, but to be honest I hadn't properly checked them, I had just looked at them from the side of the car.

Picked the car up after the service and a friend of mine who works at the dealers showed me just how bad they were, the complete inner edge had stripped off! I was basically running on the metal strips, could have blown at any time. Can't believe I did 120 on them yesterday morning. Suffice to say I had them changed before I drove home, popped into Just Tyres and they had some Michelin PS2 in at the correct size and they did me a cracking deal, never to be repeated again the guy said because its his year end for accounts and they've had a good year so he did them cheap just to clear them from stock. £246 for two fitted. 225/45/17 91Y.

So now I've got two Michelins at the front and two toyo T1-s left on the rear which will be replaced with Michelins in January-feb time.

From first feelings the Michelins seem to be really really good, they're derrived from the F1 rain tyre I think.

I'll definately always check my tyres properly from now on.

The PS2's are the best tyres I've had.

I prefer the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's.

I doubt it has anything to do with tyre pressures - more likely that you've lowered the suspension or you need an alignment - had exactly the same with my fronts!

I recently had to get 4 new tyres and as I knew I would not keep the standard Avus wheels for long I went for the cheap option. Some Kumho Escta 712's I think that was them.

Well there good value but the car turned into a horrible jelly..... turn in was all over the place, although they did grip well and hang on they did make the car feel less competent.

Now I have my new 18inch Avus fitted they have the Dunlop Sport tires fitted, and I have to say that so far in the dry these tires are amazing. The turn in is back and very sharp. And thats with standard suspension.

I'm yet to see how they are in the Wet!

Guys - your paying too much for your tyres. I had 4 x SO3's fitted all round at Bracknell tyres (225/45/17) for £375 all in. The other two tyres I priced were F1's and pilot2's. Neither of these would have cost me more than £400 fitted.....it pays to price around. Get yourself down to Bracknell batteries and Tyres.......

Dunlop SP Sports are good as well, excellent in the dry but all or nothing in the wet, I had them on my M3.

Wooooo you'd certainly know on an M3 if the tyres were any good

the Dunlops wear very well too. I used to accelerate and brake very hard, they lasted for about 25-30k miles.

I found that tyres for 17inch wheels tend to be cheaper than those for 18inch wheels. Strange when every car seems to have 18inch wheels these days!

Yeah I agree with Dippy,

just looked at prices of the 235/40/18's for when I eventually need new ones. Blackcircles.com or co.uk are normally excellant on price but the cheapest descent tire was £150 inc fitting.... thats £50 quid more than for a good quality 225/45/17....

Lets hope prices fall before you or I need new tyres for our new alloys Dippy!

yeh its my alignment, its got eibach springs on the car, got to book it in at AMD for the four wheel alignment thing they do.

theres not much in it between 17's and 18's
About £10 or so for a good tyre
So might as well go 18" with less flex in the tyre wall !

As I said - 225/40/18 = 104 fitted.

where abouts is bracknell batteries and tyres?
