Help on Downpipe Selection

Post by eric_mok » Mon Sep 13, 2004 5:25 pm

Am considering replacing my downpipes having run Milltek Dual Catback and MTM ECU for a shortwhile. Having searched thru the numerous available options, I have narrowed down my choices to 2: Milltek and LaBree Divorced Wastergate pipes (from Tantrumwerks) from the US. Need a bit of clarification from all u S4 gurus out there re the following:

- Milltek is one of my shortlisted choices because my gut feel is that it will blend nicely with my dual catback, BUT, apparently the pipes are 2.3" wide which are not that much wider than stock pipes. Of course, I've heard great things about them so the assumption is that they do work. But question is how does it compare with a 3" taper setup offered by others?

- Milltek offers 200 cell cats (as opposed to 400 by the rest) but it still claims to pass emissions tests even in the US. Is it safe to assume that those 200 cell cats to significantly outperform 400 cells as offered by others? (if so, must be genious of them to capture best of both worlds, free flow and low emissions at the same time) Or am i missing something?

- LaBree/Tantrum divorced wastegate pipes offers a great idea which i do believe will work. And according to some postings on Audiworld, the opening of the 2 pipes combined add up to >3". Compare that to Milltek's 2.3" it really sounds like the better deal, and slightly cheaper too. I understand that wider pipes could possibly lead to compromised low end, shld i expec this to be the diff between the performance of the LaBree and Milltek setup. How about high end? How would they compare?

- So bottom line is Milltek 2.3" w/200 cell cat or LaBree 3"+ w/ 400 cell cat.... Really confused and really need some feedback before i make my decision. (Or confuse me even more with other suggestions)

Thanks in advance
Eric

Can't help much except to confirm that the Miltek cats do deliver: About 30 bhp & 30 lbft to peaks and no tail-off of acceleration to the redline. I did need a custom remap for this though.

Err not sure if this is OK to do but sure the moderators will pull if it it's against the rules. When I looked at the DP options I found a really good round up of options on the AW forum.

FYI, I wasn't convinced about the twin route so I bought a set of APR DP's (cheaper than Miltek).

KayGee, did you import your APR downpipes?

yes, certainly did. Bought them from AW classifieds. Guys dealer took exception to them advising they would void his warranty. Less than 12 months old (sent me a copy of original invoice), paid £600 inc shipping, came in the original APR box with CAT bypasses and gaskets. £145 to fit, to quote the man at the garage....."b@stard of a job". This included fitting the Miltek cat back. For the price of the Miltek DP's in the UK, I got a complete system.
