RS4 Intercoolers for S4

Post by eric_mok » Fri Jun 11, 2004 1:22 pm

Researching on the topic of fitting RS4 ICs into an S4. I'm sure there are many success stories out there. Would like to know how much cutting of the bumper will be required, the complexity of the job, and what else to watch out for in terms of fitting (have read about fitment needs to be tight to prevent ??leaking??)

Plan on using a used RS4 core along with the APR hose kit. Coments welcomed. Thx.

Just had these fitted to my S4 yesterday. Quite a bit of cutting, relocating of parts to be done - IMHO not a DIY job.

I used the kit from achtuning.com (well, I sourced the parts seperately, but gave their fitting instructions to my tuning shop)

OEM RS4 cores came from philip walker
OEM RS4 mounts and shrouds from vagparts.com
Custom SAMCO hose-kit from forgemotorsport.com

Initial impressions are that my car now feels it's winter again ;-)

Woo!!! Bringing winter forward...I like it. Mind you this side of the globe (Hong Kong) your mid summer will be equivalent to late autumn. Here the dash registers 30 degree + 70%+ humidity day n day out. All the more reason to get it done!!

Plan on getting the job done by a professional installer, very proficient with 1.8T but yet to do an S/RS IC conversion. Hence my need to research:
Qs:
- I thot I'm home free with the cores and hose kit...Wud I be needing MOUNTS and SHROUDS? (by the looks of it i feel the shrouds are a bit obstructive and I know of some RS owners taking them out to aid airflow)
- I believe the kit carried by Ach hails from APR...custom Samco, so we are on the same page there
- How're the ACH instructions? Are they helpful? May need to source a copy from u if I dont get old of one, if u dont mind. Thx

Eric,

The APR and Achtuning kits are not the same (see below);

APR >>>> http://www.goapr.com/Audi/products/intercooler_rs4.html
Achtuning >>>> https://secure7.nexternal.com/achtuning ... 4ickit.jpg

IMHO the Achtuning kit is higher quality, as it includes the OEM fixing kit and the OEM brakets and OEM shrouds - better quality.

I have heard that the longer hose in the APR kit can collapse and this is why Achtuning used a shorter hose and an OEM RS4 lower pipe - might be wrong there though.

I wouldn't remove the shrouds - there has been a big debate about this over on AW and there is no real conclusion over whether a modded S4 shroud is better than the RS4 shroud - both need cutting by the way, but the RS4 does expose more surface area.

BTW - we are in the high 20's and occasionaly early 30's in the UK at the moment - which is probably why my car felt like a dog before.

Nige,

Aside from the intercoolers and Samco hoses, what parts did you buy to complete the upgrade please ?

Sorry David, missed this post - best PM me next time - if you go for the RS4 IC's you will need an RS4 lower pressure pipe and RS4 mounting brackets. You might also want to opt for the RS4 shrouds, but they do need to be cut slightly at the front to go under the S4 bumper.

I can supply part #'s if you are interested.

I have it at work. Send me a PM and I will email it to you. I will also send it to PhilT to upload onto this site.
