Ok another newbie question - this time on petrol [img]images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

The accepted wisdom here seems to be to feed the S4 Shell Optimax, which is what I do when I can find it.

But if I can't find it, people seem to suggest Super. Now what is Super?

When I'm at the service station they only tend to have three types of fuel, unleaded, unleaded LRP, and of course diesel. Is LRP Super ?

No.
LRP is lead replacement petrol used as a substitute for the old four star.

If a fuel station sells super unleaded, that is what the pump will state.

Is there any particular fuel company that sells Super or is it just on a per station basis?

I don't think it is fair to say that certain fuel companies sell Super Unleaded at all their franchised outlets.
It would probably be as you say on a "per station" basis.
I think they usually state what fuels they sell on the large sign boards at the entrance to the filling stations.

The normal (95RON) petrol is usually labelled Premium Unleaded, the (97RON) petrol is Super Unleaded, unless it is a BP outlet where it is called Ultimate Unleaded.

Thanks for the info. The car normally does have Optimax in it, I was just wondering what the recommendation was if there was none handy [img]images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

i'm sure there will be plenty of you who disagree with me, but i find Optimax to be a waste of money when i use it in my S4. i find the performance to be barely better than regular unleaded. Super on the other hand is a different ball game altogether, the car's much quicker and more responsive than with Opitmax and it gives better mpg too.

Not me, entirely, Daddy. Yes I use Optimax. It has great engine cleansing properties. In fact its full of additives of one sort or another (octane boosters, too), but like all cleansing agents shouldnt be used too regularly IMO.

Super plus unleaded (97 ron) is generally what I use, often with a couple of Millers OB's.

does anyone know of any engine additive cleaners which you can just pop into your fuel tank every now and then instead of wasting a fortune on Optimax??

it's interesting how BP have come out and actually provided figures for just how much of a difference BP Ultimate makes to engine power and mpg. not actually tried it myself mind you...

Although I'm new to S4 motoring, I have to admit that Optimax did make a significant difference to the performance of my Civic Type R, but I didn't ever try it with Super Unleaded.

Well I use Optimax about 50% of the time and super unleaded the rest. I'm not actually convinced that Optimax delivers particularly high octane properties - the doubt tends to creep in when you go to the continent. There you can get 98 octane super and you can really tell the diffeence in terms of performance and throttle response.

i've read this before on the Optimax forums where drivers have used Shell's own high octane fuel abroad, where Optimax isn't available, and they found it far superior to Optimax.

WRT petrol I find Optimax pretty good - certainly better than 95 but I much prefer Texaco SuperPlus. That stuff makes an immediate difference.
I also run a little Redex all the time. I always have in all my cars and my dad too. He's run mpg books for 15 years and swears that he gets 10% more mpg when he runs Redex. Interesting....

Interesting you should mention Texaco fuel there Richness, because, though I only ever use normal 95 unleaded (because of my high mileage, hence saving money!), as soon as I've filled up with Texaco petrol in the past (just normal 95 unleaded), I've immediately noticed a definite performance improvement.

I once ran the tank completely dry, then filled up with Superplus, but to me there seemed absolutely no difference, though my car is stock; modified cars may benefit perhaps? I know when I was running my Cossies a few years ago my mechanic insisted I stick to Super, as they were all severely modified.

Yet there are always other factors involved: pressure, wet roads etc etc.. it is sometimes hard to tell!
