Been quoted 159 (+vat) for a new replacement Bosch alternator, free P&P - is this reasonable?

Also, the belt in question woody, dont suppose you have a part number and price for that too? :) Cheers in advance

Took a punt on the alternator, it seemed competetive price wise and the guy on he phone was very knowledgable, was able to tell me about the early/late bosch/valeo differences without any prompting from me and as it was free next day delivery so i went for it.

Got a guy locally hopefully lined up to do the work too, ex audi machanic too so should know what he's doing, just need to find a belt just incase that is worn and we should be good to go.

Watch this space.

I had the same noise today... I was hoping it was a belt catching on a piece of loose plastic...

... But no, the bearings have gone in the water pump. Nice one.

ouch, you have my sympathy JohnRet.. :(

Whatever you do, try and avoid getting Audi main Stealer to do the work... ended up costing me best part of a grand when they did mine... an expensive mistake!

Cheers,

I took it to my VW Audi specialist. £400 + VAT seems fair.

doesn't seem bad at all! remember to get the updated design waterpump (metal internals from memory, rather than the original plstic spec) and newer metal gasket put in inplace of the dead one.

UPDATE:

After being off the road for nearly 2 weeks the car went to the garage this morning to have alternator fitted but moderately bad news soon followed. The guy can't get the alternator out without taking front off the car. Aside from this, he found the cause of the dead alternator - idler pulley shows some considerable play which caused movement in the belt and thus strain on alternator. So, while front of car is off and idler pulley is being done it makes sense to do cambelt to save on labour later... what are the other essential bits that people recommend getting done while having a cambelt done?

Damned money pit... impending house move and nagging misses is making it ruddy tricky to justfy the expense of the S4.... but i love it so...what to do?!

Is there not a couple or rollers\levers as well which it is 'good practice' to replace at the same time?

water pump was brand spanking new this time last year so can't imagine that will need doing again.... hold on.. this time last year... ther's an expensive pattern developing ... maybe i should just lock the car away in a garage from november to january every year!
