Up until now I thought B6 was what was being targetted. I didnt realise the B5 was a target too... I am quite weary, but I dont think enough. This post is a sobering reminder than no one is really safe and we must always be on the look out. I hope that your insurance pay out was fair to your costs and glad everyone in the fam was not hurt.

Consider fitting an anti-hijack device next time in addition to tracker?

The problem with anti-hijacking systems is that these guys know where you live....so when the car stops after the anti-hijacking system kicks in they either

a, run for it but beat you and your family senseless at a later date or
b, come back there and then to get you to de-activate the system...with menaces.

Not sure I fancy either scenario....

That is a bit extreem for a 10k car... they would REALLY have to want your car to do that. I doubt they would come back? Hope not anyway  :?

Sorry to hear about this. As Brett said the car can always be replaced.
I wonder if the fact it was a 51 plate made it more attractive. Surely as the cars get older they become less viable for a theif to use.

As an alternative to the 1.9TDi badge how about an older reg plate. Would anyone steal a B'reg audi?!

The other scenario I imagine is that once the car stops they bail but not after they have given the car a good kicking (baseball bats included) for their inconvenience...

Sorry to hear that too - having heard about the spate of B5 and B7 RS4 thefts I thought my S4 was a relatively low risk (even in red!) and still believe it is. However if you are a criminal planning a robbery and can't find an RS4, RS6 etc, then a B5 S4 Avant is almost as good for the purpose and while you may think the discreet looks mean less chance of theft, it's also a reason why the criminals love them especially in sober colours as they just don't stand out so police will take less interest.
Nevertheless, I always take a route home which means I can filter out any following traffic.
Will keep an eye out for it as there aren't that many.

Maybe a 1.9TDI badge is a good idea after all. An older custom plate may well be a good idea too.

Been looking into tracking solutions and costs are about 1k installed and 200 per month at the one unit I was considering!! OUCH... anyone with any ideas on alternatives PM me.

Sorry to hear this - but I just heard of a similar incident with a b5 rs4 as well.

I think if someone was desperate for my car I would let them have it and not run the risk of them coming back to me or my family - it is only a lump of metal. Spend your money on agreed value, and new for old on modded parts, insurance.

Absolutely right - a car is just metal, rubber, silicon and plastic at the end of the day - and inanimate objects are NEVER worth getting hurt over - but you'd still want to kill the <beep> that had the <beep> inconsiderate callous gaul to threaten your 18 month old child - to me that is totally unforgiveable - any <beep> that can follow you home from work then threaten your child, threaten you, and threaten your elderly relatives needs crucifying and deserves nothing less than a slow drawn out tortuous death - <beep> like this deserve NO MERCY WHATSOEVER ... make no mistake about that. I would burn them alive if i had my way.

that is seriously bad, glad you weren't hurt mate.
I dont think anyone would risk going back for the code to a car that had an anti hijack device if they had already driven away they would know you had called the police as soon as they left.
I think I might also re-look at the Tdi badge, although I dont think they made noggy blue avants in Tdi :-(

I was halfway through a project of making my own tracker a few years ago, its pretty simple as you can buy GPS 'chips' relatively cheaply, and you can use a pay as you go phone simcard to activate it (ie call up the buried sim in the car and it starts the GPS running and transmitting current position via GSM), and then you can use AA roadmap or equivilent to track the car. its cheap and can be hidden relatively easily, no monthly costs. I think it would relatively easy to rig the system up to activate a relay and stop the engine, or for s4tan.... rig it to lock the doors, and spray pepper spray through the vents! ha

... it wouldn't be pepper spray - it would be cyanide gas with a hint of anthrax for flavouring ...
