yup, Magnatec is semi-synth i believe. it's a top quality oil but not ideally suited to our Bi-Turbo engines

I've read the link, very good info, but could be confusing :? . So am i right in saying that 5w40 is the way to go? Thats the outcome i came to after reading the link.... I've just put my Magnatec 10w40 in aswell. Alot of people still have different opinions though, so i guess at the end the day you will use what you feel comfortable with. When i've done my next 5k i'll decide at the time which oil to go for, i'm sure the'll be more talk about it before then :)

0W40, 5W40 and 10W40 are all good. If the weather gets VERY cold in the winter, the 10W40 might be a bit too thick for start-up though (remember that the turbos have an oil bearing so if the oil is too thick the turbines could spin off centre.

Personally I wouldn't use a semi-synth on a turbo car, especially the B5 with K03s. Even if you do change every 5K (I change my fully synth every 5K), the extra risk of coking the oil lines just doesn't seem worth it to me...

The trouble I have is finding a 5W40 fully synth I'm happy using. Was planning to use Mobil 1

What options are there for 5W40?

Having read all the advice last time round, I went for a 5W50 fully synthetic from Valvoline (seemed like the compromise between tuners recommending 10W60 and others recommending 5W40).

I've just changed again this week(10W60 Castrol RS) and note that the oil temps are higher than with 5W50 - takes longer to cool back down to 100 after a run than before (it's not ambient temp diff - coz if anthing its colder this week than last week).

The suggested additional friction would obviously account for the diffs in temp (not sure whether this also equates to better protection on a modded engine), but I think I'll swap back to the 5W50  compromise in September.
