Re: ESP ?
As someone who has impartialy watched this thread develop , IMHO the direction it's taking is pretty unsavoury (to put it mildly). The worst kind of boy-racerism really seem to have come to the fore over this little issue - on the other hand it was encouraging to see some patches of reason through the clouds of testosterone. Riz, i think u were the driver in Driving Miss Daisy !!
MODS... can u change Riz's name from ' spend too much time on here ' to 'drives like an old fart'

Re: ESP ?
ESP monitors the vehicle's response to the driver's steering and braking inputs to detect oversteer or understeer. If sensors detect that a skidding condition is developing, ESP brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess power as needed to help keep the vehicle going in the direction the driver is steering.
What does the ESP off switch do?
The switch disables ESP's capability to reduce the engine torque. It also reduces the ESP intervention threshold to about 20%.
How do I know ESP is working?
The triangle in the center of the speedometer flashes when ESP intervenes; either with ESP switched on or off. It's a reminder to adjust your speed to the prevailing road conditions, usually by reducing it. If instead one "steps on it", with ESP ON, the engine power may be reduced to prevent a potentially critical situation.
Electronic Stability Program (ESP®)
The standard-fitted ESP® system selectively applies braking forces to the front and rear wheels in such a way as to reduce the risk of skids and slides and help the driver maintain control in critical situations. The system extends the technology of the anti-lock braking and acceleration skid control systems with a range of additional sensors which are used principally to detect yaw motion.
The ESP® computer continuously compares the actual behaviour of the vehicle with the computed ideal values. The moment the car deviates from the direction intended by the driver, specially developed control logic causes the system to intervene with split-second speed to bring the car back on track. It does this in two ways:
Precisely controlled braking at one or more wheels
Reducing engine power.
ESP® in this way helps to stabilise the vehicle in critical situations.
i rest my case.

Re: ESP ?
It's a bit late in the thread for me to join in, but here's my 2p's worth:
There are many factors affecting road safety, and ESP is just one of them. It is technically true to say that risks are reduced with ESP on compared to it being off for every given circumstance. However ultimately there are so many variants to road safety that it is impossible to be totally prescriptive, which is why UK law follows the 'duty of care' principle, backed up by key laws governing things such as speed, alchohol etc.
The upside of this principle means that the UK government does not need to become involved on issues such as 'if a car has an ESP feature it should be on'. The downside for us is that we are held responsible for our own decisions.
So if you drive with ESP off, you have taken the decision to deactivate a safety feature. If you have an accident and this fact is revealled (someone needs to check this with VAG-COM...), you may potentially be held as negligent.
It's a crazy system, because someone driving an old car which has passed it's MOT might have an accident more easily than a car with ESP off, but negligence would be much harder to prove.
Personally, after nearly killing myself in my Impreza, I always drive with ESP on!

I seriously doubt that a negligence claim would successfully hang on a non-mandatory safety feature such as ESP. Dangerous or careless driving would need to be proved in addition. For a start, motor insurers quote on a vehicle inclusive of all its mechanical and electronic functions, such as ESP, and presumeably if they insure a car that has an ESP option they are including cover for both on and off scenarios provided, as I said, dangerous driving cannot be proved.
Re: ESP ?
This thread seems to have gone a little off course but an entertaining read all the same
From my point of view as a newbie, ESP will be staying firmly on for the foreseeable future unless I take the car to the track etc. Especially while I'm still new to the car and getting used to it.
But, does anyone actually know when the UK S4 got ESP?
It also now has me wondering if the UK models are different to the timeline in the US for the other "improvements" larger oil lines etc. The US models got those in mid 2001 apparently.. ??
Alex.

I think it was the 99.5 revision, although the earliest of the facelift s4s did not have ESP.

Is this question on course then?
Anyway, the thread is entitled ESP which covers a broad range of thought associated with the subject, including the ethical and philosophical angles, IMVHO.
Re: ESP ?
On the track, I definitely have my ESP switched off as it is far too intrusive on my remapped S3 with it on. Standard wise, I don't know.
I also have it switched off if I need a quick getaway from the lights/junctions etc as again, the remapped S3 soon has the engine power being cut unlike a standard power S3. Again it is a shame that we can't just turn off the traction control element responsible for engine power loss, leaving just the ESP on.
Another thought here is that surely tyre choice/condition is a major factor with the handling of our cars and with ESP on or off. I don't know about anyone else, but my car is not performing very well with my Toyo TS/1's in the wet at all unlike my previous Goodyear F1's.
ESP has definitely saved me from a few scary moments, pulling the car around to save it from being kerbed. Anyone who turns this off in the Wet either needs their head examined or is a far better driver than me.. Driver upgrade required for my car I think.
Riz, was that a '4 wheel Drift' or 'Understeer Drift' you had?? Remember, Biturbo has volunteered to show you how it is done properly at Oulton Park..
