I recently did an oil change and put the usual mobil 1 0W40 normally even with a bit of spirited driving it barely goes over 100 degrees. On the way back from MRC from the remap the long trip on the M5 was showing increasing oil temps. Doug told me to keep an eye on it and use thicker oil if keeps getting hot. Sure read somewhere that 40 oil starts to break down at around 115 degrees so think to be safe the summer months will be run using something a bit thicker especially when i go the Ring in August.

Good excuse for me to cycle into work more often... and I have been. Not helping my weight (see off topic post lol).
   Looks like I am gonna be in the same situation soon!

I intend to use 10w60 when I get it back up and running, reason being I do play a lot and see some high temps with my RS4 engine, can't remember now exactly where it would go to ... I have the RS4 oil cooler.

I only live a couple of miles from work (been walking for two months now!! shock, horror, I thought driving was the only way!) so might just have to continue walking so as not to hurt the new turbo's! :?

What sort of money is the oil cooler as a retro fit mod? Should we be looking to use 0W40 oil but fit oil coolers due to our tuning not alter the oil?
Graham, I use Synta Gold 5w40 in my RS4. Change the oil and filter every 4,000 miles. I used the same oil in my modded S4 also. Oil temp never goes above 100..........
I have a brand new oil cooler on the car so this probably helps with the temperature.

If you're looking for a compromise, CAS do the Valvoline VR1 5W50 fully synthetic http://www.central-auto.co.uk/ about £28 IIRC. I tend to run 5W50 full-synth in winter and 10W60 semi-synth in summer, temps tend to be 120c when pushing on with both grades of oil.

Never use semi synthetic in these engines, always full synth.

The engineer that put in my KO4s said that at stock, 5w40 would be fine, but when remap'ed and tuned etc, 10w60 (fully synth of course) was what he would recommend. As it happened he couldnt source 10w60 at the time, so we fell back to 10w50. As mentioned above, with the hotter engine temps remaping will induce, he strongly advised against Xw40 grade oils.

Yep - i was advised the same: 10w60 due to the higher temps of a k04/fuelled/re-mapped car.

Julian, what oil did you use before the K04's?

I used 0w40 (Castrol EDGE sport again) on the k03s ... when i "went k04" Doug advised the oil change to 10w60 because of the turbos and high temps ...

5W50 is fully synth, but I didn't think you could get a fully synthetic 10W60. Castrol state "synthetic technology" or something like that but it's a semi-synthetic, Valvoline is definitely semi-synthetic, IIRC Millers is semi-synth, but if you know of one please tell...
