Help with VAG-COM Scan results.

Post by stimp » Wed Mar 28, 2007 7:57 pm

Hi Chaps,

JUust scanned my car and have the following faults. Anyone shed any light on causes and solution would be great. I only have a shareware version so can't read a couple.

16502 Engine coolant temp sensor(G62)Signal too high.
P0118-35-10...intermit

18010-?
P1602-35-10...Intermit

18047-?
P1639-35-10...Intermit

17963-Charge Pressure.Max Exceeded
P155-35-10 Intermit.

I geuss the top one is a temp sender, possibly related to the issue I have with the temp gauge sometime fluctuating. No idea on the second two. Number 4 prob due to remap.

All thoughts and any decoding of the middle too appreciated. :D

I would think you have a boost leak, check you tbb & f-hose as these are the usual culprits then either get a pressure test done or get it up to MRC for a full health check

regarding the accel position sensor, I'd check the resistance across the first potentiometer.

Dunno if you know but the throttle is purely electronic on these cars, the position of the throttle is determined by the resistance measured accross two sets of potentiometers.

Potentially you have a failure of the first one, the car is still obviously driveable like this but you now have no reduundancy. A potentiometer is basically a strip of a carbon / graphite material with an arm that moves across it, as the arm moves the resistance varies. Over time the arm "scrapes" some of the carbon / graphite material away which creates a dust. As the arm moves and comes into contact with the dust you can have sudden increases / decreases in resistance instead of a nice gradual increase / decrease.

This is probably whats going on here. Upto you whether you do anything about it. Personally, I'd say no rush - keep your eye out on eBay for a throttle position sender for an A4 and snap it up - fit it when the whether turns nice again!

Note: Fault 4 normally causes the car to go into limp home mode to save the turbos.
