Head light washers

Post by GrimReaper » Sun Aug 06, 2006 12:22 pm

They have never really worked since i have had the car when a mate checked them for me they were only coming 1cm out of the bumper and just a dribble of water comes out the end. I know they work by pressure but do they use the same pump as the windscreen washers? as they are working fine. If not does anyone know where the pump located and cost of replacing it.

the pump is a seperate unit to the windscreen washer pump although they both share the same reservoir. i think you can gain access to it by removing the inner wheelarch liner on the passenger side, i'd guess there could be a filter in there that might need cleaning

Cheers will have a look later. I take it it will be obvious to spot as the S4 has so many random parts that i dont know what they are for half the time. :?

if i remember right the pump actually pushes into a slot on the back of the reservoir. think it cost about £30 for a new one from audi - bit of a fiddle to get bits in and out of arch but not too difficult. cant be if i managed it!

Does indeed slot on the back of the reservoir. Easy to get out, as s4seeker said, just remove the nearside arch liner then 3/4 bolts hold the bottle in. It's the top pump of the two.........

But, don't the headlight washers push out using pressure? If they're not pushing too far out then you've probably got a leak on the pipe. If I remember correctly the pressure builds in a pipe which runs from the bottle, along the back of the bumper, and when it builds to a certain amount, the washers push out. If this pipe has a leak then the pressure won't be great enough to push the washers properly out. :D

Either that or the pipe has a kink/ blockage in it restricting the pressure

Already know that. Cheers anyway. Must be hell of a pressure the system runs as i tried pulling it up manually from the bumper, it lifted smoothly but was harder to lift than i thought. Suppose its to hold it down to stop the wind from lifting it.
