DEAD TURBO 2

Post by jimbogrey » Wed Mar 29, 2006 10:29 am

As per post on track day day forum, turbo gone, local garage say blades possibly in contact with housing causing whinning sound from 1500rpm and half throttle.

I presume there has been a bearing failure, however thare was no noise from the turbo previously and when it happened (changing from 2 to 3rd) there was an instant and total loss of boost. all hoses checked nothing obvious.

Question would the car detect a turbo failure and go limp immediatly.

there is nothing showing on vagcom apart from an out of limits reading which was there before.

Boost loss may happen because turbo stalled when the blades hit housing

thanks for the concern

I am still able to drive the car.....must now be the slowest S4 in the world....to prevent turbos spooling up i have to drive at 1/10th throttleand no more than 3000 rpm so 0-60 about 45 seconds

Well you've gotr to laugh or you'd cry especially with a £3500 bill around the corner

you can use vagcom to reduce boost pressure. one of the engine adaptation channels.

Sorry to hear that, been there.

If you are getting the siren sound it is likely a turbo is toast.

You probably have a boost leak as well.

There is a way to stop the car requesting boost, MRC Doug told me but I've forgotten what it is. Recommended as you may be super lucky, some boost leaks sound similar to turbo death.

The ECU cannot detect turbo failure unfortunately.

What happens when you spool up jimbo, does it whistle like a good-un ....? or does it lock up..?
My first S4 had an HKN chip from new, it was running same turbo,s as new as far as I was aware, in the winter my friends could hear me 2 roads away.......
went just as well coz i got bored of the noise and bunged some new k03's on that I had lying around,(after 2.5 years!) made no difference in performance, if anything with the pressure sensing pipe fixed(had a crak on banjo coupling) it was slower, because it didnt overspool anymore......... :?
I still have the old turbo's and you can see where they were both stiking the compressor housing, for along time... b@stard when they do go though

@Tartan Rob..... can you dial up the b/pressure that way .. or is it capped ..?

David

Hi Jim

Sorry to hear about your problems... any more news on what needs fixing.

Shame you missed the Windsor Meet last night. It was a good turn out.

Precausion

Post by mrwang » Fri Mar 31, 2006 2:35 pm

Hi there, Sorry to hear about your blower. Same thing happened to me last year. As a precausion Kim @ QST told me to disconnect the cables to the N75 valve. This will stop them trying to boost above 0.5 bar or something around that. Good luck with the KO4s, the only way is up now!

Ben
