An RS246 moment in Newbury

Post by DickyC » Tue Feb 10, 2009 1:30 pm

Following a chance encounter, a silver RS4 and a black RS2 drove in convoy into Sainsbury's car park at 11.30 on Tuesday morning and owners Contigo and DickyC proceeded to put the world to rights.

This is as it should be.

:D Well done mate.

Good to see you again and the black beauty. Hope it's a keeper though in the end!

Thanks, Phil, but I'm horribly afraid she's going to have to go :(

Get the car spot on and suddenly there's no work in oil and gas.

Typical.

I'll take some pics over the weekend and put her up for sale next week.

Even if I tell myself I'm not selling her - I'm merely surrendering custodianship in exchange for a financial consideration  - it's still going to be a sad day.

Now you're talking :D

I'm for it.

Now, that reminds me... I've got this real complicated bit of thinking to try and explain - and probably get shot down while I do it.

You know when you brake from max speed at the bridge how it can get a bit hairy, what with the bend tightening up and the roundabout appearing to be so much closer than usual at that speed? Well, when I did it in the Mini, a standard 1969 Cooper 'S', I did 90 by the bridge as opposed to 120 in the RS. I thought the Mini did really well, but the odd thing is that the old girl laughed at the braking. It wasn't a problem at all. Scary in the RS, no problem in the Mini. I know it was going 30 mph slower but it was at the maximum speed it could attain at that point just as the RS was. My point is, shouldn't the braking for a more modern car be better anyway, or at least be as good when viewed in proportion to the performance?

The Mini has 12" inch wheels and the brakes were always a problem for BMC to try and get something effective in so small a space. The discs look like milk bottle tops with calipers. If you look at it as I did, which was like-for-like in terms of performance related to braking ability, the Mini won hands down. Or is that complete cobblers?

Dicky, I want to see your Mini - I had one myself, a long time ago, fantastic fun and no electronic stuff to get in the way - do you have a picture that you can put up?

Will do, Paul.

Not only will I dig a pic or two but also it will be at the Goodwood Breakfast Club in March.

How do you guarantee a clear run?

Is three o'clock on Christmas morning a good time?

Hey Paul, the Mini is out of hibernation and there are a couple of days for me to shine it up for the Breakfast Club. I'll take some pics and we can all wonder how we ever got in them let alone them being one of the quickest cars of their day. (I did embarass the McDonalds Car Park Pug 105 Brigade though, who not only all look about 12 but also had the damn gall to laugh at the Mini! They couldn't catch me :D )

If you're not going to Goodwood, we could meet up one evening or something.

Was that your Stag in ACS?

It's actually my brother's, Paul. He bought it in the early seventies. I looked after it over the winter and "exercised" it occasionally. It hasn't got wet for twenty years!

The speedo is a bit optimistic but, a few years ago now, was showing 110 when the bonnet came up - with a bit of a bang - and folded itself over the roof. That was quite exciting for a few moments. Pete was fairly understanding when I took it back. "Well, that's never happened before," he said.

In addition to some fairly rudimentary equipment, there's a stick in the boot to measure the fuel level. Okay, it's not an MoT requirement, but it might be time for a new sender unit.

The April Goodwood Breakfast Club is a fairly likely outing if anyone would like to see the grandad of modern hot boxes.

Running a little hot there, mate. There's no petrol but there is a 130mph speedo - lol!

A gen-oo-ine Mini Cooper 'S', a classic if ever there was one. Fans of hot production cars have a lot to thank John Cooper for.

Didn't get it together to do the en masse Burger King Dash, but tried it today in the ghastly Vectra that I had to replace the RS2 with :(

Both are 2.2 litre petrol:

Vectra (2004 50K) rolling start, 95 by the bridge.

RS2 (1995 145K) standing start, 120 by the bridge.

Al said I'd miss it :( :( :( :( :( :(

Still, mustn't grumble; this time next year we'll all be miwyonnaires and I'll buy another one :D

So where did it go to Dicky? I didn't think you'd have much trouble selling it really.

shame but as you say maybe can replace it with an RS4 or something in the future? Who knows?

Dastardly RS246 man trevithick sweet talked her into running away to Cornwall with him.

There's rumours of the runaways going to the Goodwood Breakfast Club in June. We'll see.

For anyone who hasn't been, the Breakfast Club is terrific. Once or occasionally twice a month in the better weather loads of people - well, mostly blokes actually - take their cars to Goodwood, park up, wander about looking at other people's cars and then having a fry up courtesy of the Earl of Marmalade. There's a fairly elastic theme every time, 7th June it's supercars and at the end of the month it's post 70's driver's cars. It's good; nice and relaxed.

The missing months are deep winter and the months that clash with the Festival of Speed and the Revival Meeting.

Hi Richard,

Sincere apologies, I have not been on the forum for a while and hadn't been paying attention to the plethora of pictures and suggestions that you had been putting up! What a coincidence - My mini was an Austin 'S', mark II, in that colour scheme and also was on a 'G'plate! aahhh, brings back memories!! I had 'cosmic' alloys on mine and a mate had the Dunlop alloys on his mark III.

The Stag at ACS is mine for sure - some work being done there and I now plan to get it sold.

Be good to hook up at some point - the Breakfast Club looks good - might just make the 7th, failing that we should hook up!
