anyone any ideas on how to get insured on the nurburgring ? Costs etc just for a few laps? My insurance company (elephant) are having none of it. Ill be driving past the ring after christmas and think it would be rude not to do a few laps , but the horror stories im hearing about insurance is making me think otherwise.

Moved to 'Audi S & RS Ownership' forum by me as its not B5 S4 specific.

You will probably need specialist insurance - I had the name of someone, but can't remember.

I sent a letter to my insurers giving them the details of the cover I required (They do not specifically exclude the Ring), and they came back with an offer of £80 per day which seemed reasonable for a £40k car. Insurance for the Ring is nigh on impossible, so good luck. Oh, and just to make things more complex, it is illegal to drive on the Ring with no insurance.....

There's definitely a gap in the market for some shrewd German's in a portcabin selling insurance outside the entrance to the ring.

Mind you, they'd probably be paying out much more than they would be making in premiums...

If you look on YouTube for "The 10 second Ring King" you'll know what I mean!

You will probably need to get track day insurance, plenty of companies around that offer this...

Expect to pay 200-300 quid a day for this ...

Trackday insurance is difficult to get at the ring because its not a trackday but not really a public road either (at least in the eyes of your UK insurer).

Yes, I got quotes from them too but they are expensive, have a large excesses and in common with other 'track' policies, there is no third party cover either.

There is a large ongoing debate about 'ring' i.e. Nordschlieffe insurance on most car forums. Theoretically your european extension on a UK policy covers you for at least third party liability. If your policy document excludes the Nordschliefe, one way toll roads etc, then they have a get out. Some policies without these get-outs are being argued by the insurers when a claim is made, based on it being a race track.

The whole thing is a mess.

Why do you need third party cover? Track Insurance is all about insuring your own car for any damage no matter how it is caused - whether someone hits you or you simply run out of talent.

moris (mentioned by viperbl above) charge about £ 180 a day for UK trackday insurance and I think you can chose the level of excess and the level of cover.

Have you tried Greenlight?

Thats the thing, because its a public road, the minimum you need is 3rd party!

As David was saying, the whole thing is a nightmare and a mess because some insurance companies don't see it as a public road, but see it as a track ...

It's a German toll road soa far as the Germans are concerned. To drive on German roads, you at least need 3rd party cover.

So if your regular UK insurance excludes this location, even if you get track cover for your car, you are not legally covered is my understanding.

I paid around £300 for 2 drivers for one day.

looking back it wasn't really worht it, but insuirance never is unless u use it

worht checking policy as some insurers haven't caught on yet.

The nurburgring is awesome fun.

At the end of the day its a public road. You dont have to race round, you pay the same money as everyone else, you could drive at 10mph if you so decided. Dont be put off, just drive carefully. But you know the more laps you do the more confident you get.

Dont forget. Any offs and its costly. You need to pay to be towed off (150 quid i think) and pay for damage to the barriers.. As well as your car..

I was there in July, it was a well good laugh.. Even seeing the smashed up TVR, Porsche 911 and various other cars.
