buy modified or not

Post by hanman » Tue Oct 08, 2013 4:25 pm

hi all,

i've been a silent forum member for some years now. when i first joined i was ready to treat myself to an RS6 but my job situation took a turn for the worse and i had to shelve the idea.

I am now back looking to change my car and having owned Lexus', Ford's, Skoda (vRS), BMW's i'm now coming back round to looking at an S or RS.. My budget is circa 10k so i have quite a few choices between S4, RS4, S6 & RS6. However, there is a particular S4 that i have seen on fleabay that got me thinking about my choices.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-S4-RS4-A ... 25825ff9ca

This S4 has had quite a lot of money spent on it and the write-up and performance stats leave certain RS cars playing catch-up. this then got me thinking about modified cars.. research on the subject has suggested that a well modified car is worth its weight in gold but there are alot of modded trash out there.

my question to all you knowledgeable Audi folk out there is... Would you buy a modified S or RS car (like the one in the link) over a stock (or lightly modified) S or RS?
hypothetically, if i had purchased the car in the ad, would my maintenance and running costs be on par with an S4 or an RS4? my thinking is that it would be a bit of both, i.e. some components would be S4 related costs but other parts would cost the same levels as an RS4. is that a correct assumption?

Also, can a modified car of this nature only be looked after by an RS specialists or can a reliable local mechanic keep it tip top?

thanks for reading.

I wouldn't want to spend 7k on a 145,000 mile S4 when 10k will buy a 100,000 mile RS4

could the 3k difference not be kept as a slush fund for the upkeep of the S4 (and all its mods)?

Yes of course it could. But I'm sure you'd rather have an incredibly rare RS4 over a hotted up S4.....
