How long did it take to find your car?

Post by Nobby » Fri May 25, 2012 10:19 am

Hiya chaps

I'm still in the hunt for an RS6. Although I'm not spending a huge amount of time looking (as I haven't quite got enough spare cash yet) I've seen 3 so far to get a feel for things. To be honest they were all nice cars but each needed a bit of work (1 from PH, 1 autotrader & 1 random ebay one).

I was planning to have a look at one on pistonheads tomorrow (black with black wheels) but its now sold. Aside from checking autotrader, pistonheads, ebay and here ofcourse is there anywhere else I should look? I'm not in a massive rush but there aren't exactly hundreds for sale out there, possibly 50 C5s and about half of them are in my price range. I really missed the boat a few weeks ago when there was one for sale locally to me that ticked all the boxes but it sold after 2 days :(

So, how long did it take to find yours?

Cheers
Chris

I think all in all it took me best part of a year.

I wanted one while I had my allroad, but just couldn't find one that suited me, I wanted a black saloon with all the extras, but it never happened, so I gave up and bought a run around to save more money, and then about 3 months just before Christmas I started looking again, and bought the plus in January, although it really wasn't what I wanted, it was a plus for good money, so bought it.

Have you looked at the plus for sale in the classifieds? That'll tick all your boxes and more, and importantly it's a forum car with history that can be verified!
I used to own a 6, now I'm just a lurker!

Took about 3-4 months. Looked at about 6-7 around the country. First drive of the this Plus told me it was tight and well cared for ( it helps to like the owner and his honesty) and oh so much more rapid than the other ones I tried. :) Bought it the next day. No regrets. I have not had to spend to much on her maintence wise over the last 6 months apart from rear tyres and a cv thingy until now....she went in yesterday for the alternator, crank shaft sensor, brake discs, pads and fluid change plus drop link bushes and an oil service, filters and seals. Looks better now than when I bought her though, spent a lot time on the paintwork, seats and some cosmetics. Still standard elsewhere though ! :) for now!

About 12 months deciding on what sort of car to buy... list included things like:

BMW 8 series  !
Merc CL600
Vaux Monaro VXR
BMW M5
Maserati 4200

...before news of our 1st baby came through, then all 2-door options went out of the window, and had to go down the 'sensible' route.

Once I decided on an RS6, I guess it took me about 6 months to find one that ticked all of the boxes for me and bought the first one I test-drove that met my requirements.

Never looked back since - an aweseome buy!

I did toy with the idea of a Monaro, but it'd have to be a VXR600 and I couldn't live with the association with Vauxhall. Plus my missus doesn't know the difference between a 4.2 v8 twin turbo and a 2 litre turbo, but a 7 litre V8 might push it.

I also like the E39 M5 but they are really showing their age. Externally isn't so bad but there are very few <100k mile ones about and don't get me started on the interiors. It would also have to be a Le Mans blue one and they aren't common.

CL600 is a good shout but more wood interiors I'm afraid and not uber fast. My bro had a CLK500 and was well and truly bent over by Merc come servicing time.

I was looking for an E60 M5 at the time I bought mine, a friend suggested the RS6 as an alternative instead. Took me about 3 months to find mine.

I was preparing a list when one came up quite local to me, so took a look and felt let down a little by what I'd seen. The dealer was more of a Landy man and only took the RS6 as he thought he'd get good money out of it. The car drove well but just wasn't clean and tidy, plus the salesman wasn't willing to move on the price so i walked about. About a week or two later one turned up in Swindon. It was in far better shape and i bought it. After just over two years, she's in need of a full on detail jump to make sure shine as she should.

Only saw the one I bought, wasn't going to say no to a sprint blue plus, forum owned from 9k miles and now with only 36k on it! Drove down to Great Yarmouth in my Beemer at silly o'clock as needed to get to work for 12 and GY is a 8ish hour round trip. Agreed to buy it and picked it up about a week or so later, that was a bloody good feeling, having wanted one from 2002, still wasn't able to drive it as was only 20 years old at the time, waited three months 'till me birfday and now it is my daily driver, 8k miles into ownership a few thousand down and a couple of laps of the ring and nothing has really gone wrong still. Looks like I will go for a C6 RS6 saloon after this.

4 months. Bought the second car I looked at, private sale, forum car already named. I could check it's history back mega years, well worth it.
It's also worth noting that I was in the market for a number of different cars, with a mind to buy the best example that came up first. But my heart was set on a 993 or an RS6, none of the others really did it for me.
- Merc E55
- Merc CLK55
- Porker 993
- C5 RS6
- Beemer M5
No matter where you go, there you are.

Took me about a year on and off until a forum owned C5 came up and even then I waited 2 months for the price to drop. I was regularly scouting PH, AT and local traders for others but in the end I fell head over heels when I saw my one in the flesh out by Brandshatch.

Mechanically sound and drove like new. Befriended the owner and we still keep in touch which is really nice. The car was all very tight with no rattles or performance issues etc., just had the usual 'be prepared stuff' that any new owner should keep in mind.

Enjoy it everyday either driving it or just looking at it! It's a special motor indeed...

My story is a little different. My business partner Seb has an RS (currently for sale). I had driven it a few times and loved it so wanted my own. Browsing eBay one very late night in the office, I came across what looked like a bargain, just about to end. Immaculate condition, just been detailed, FSH. Completely on a whim I bought it, without having even seen it in the flesh. I sniped it in the closing seconds of the auction and went to Liverpool the following day to pick it up.

Of course it wasn't without it's faults. I've given MRC £6.5k so far just for remedial work and the usual remap, exhaust, coilovers but it's almost spot on now.

I should mention I already had 3 cars at the time and really didn't need an RS6. I still don't. I walk to work!
