Brake pad warning light

Post by MalcolmSu » Sat May 12, 2012 2:50 pm

i changed my front pads last weekend. At the time it seemed a straight forward job and everything has been fine through my daily commutes this week. Until last night after I got home I started the car up again and as I put the car into Drive the brake pad warning light on the dash came on.

I've just taken a the wheels off and everything looks fine. The wires and connectors for the wear indicators all look okay.

Any thoughts on what could be wrong? Anything I can test? If I just disconnect them will the warning light on the dash go away?? :-)

Dont mean to tell anyone how to suck eggs but I`m assuming it was an amber light and stayed on and wasnt the alarm going off as you changed into drive without having your foot on the brake fully?

Are you sure it's pads and not just the general brake warning symbol? Checked the fluid level?

Fluid level is fine. It's the orange circle with two 'pads' to the left and right of the circle.

I was getting that mate a while back, turns out the pad sensor was dirty or had moved or a bit of both, cleaned, returned and light hasnt come back.

OK, if it's orange then it's the pads. Odd. You can disconnect the sensors, but it's a bit odd why they would make a circuit.

Place to start is disconnecting them from the pads and seeing if the problem goes away. If not then the problem is further upstream.

yesterday was a washout for us so I never got a chance to look at the sensors again... Then when I started the car up this morning to drive to work the DIS warning had gone! Drove to work and then 32 miles later as I pulled into the car park, I braked and it came back on again. Still there on my drive home tonight... :(

Had a similar thing last year. On mine, it turned out to be the loom that goes from the front hub to the inner wing which had a broken wire internally. Used to put the pad warning lamp on intermittently. Discovered it by wiggling the wires until the light came on.

i'm pretty sure the brake in the warning wire is quite common on audis, my mates s6 used to break, and so did his s4!
I used to own a 6, now I'm just a lurker!

You can program it out via Vag Com.
I hate all these sensors & poop for the very reason you have to post.
Take it back to old skool where the 1st you know the brakes were goosed was metal on metal, lol

Program out the tyre pressure & paking sensors while your at it as there poop too :audibash:

This is the fourth set of front pads I've fitted but the very FIRST time I've managed to do it without having to replace the disks at the same time! Not that the sensors did me any good the previous three times anyway. :D

Give the connectors a wiggle on each side, you should be able to do this with the wheel still on as far as I can remember (as it happened to me too after a pad change).
It was just a dodgy connection at the connector in my case.
