'Sensible' upgrade

Hi,

Have been lurking around on the RS4 part for some time, but first time on here.

We currently have an RS4 saloon, but are considering reducing to one family vehicle. The 'new' vehicle needs to be an estate. The obvious choice for us would be an RS4 Avant, but I am rather smitten by the RS6 Avant.

Our budget would be what we could get for our RS4 (circa 18k part ex, more if private sale).

An honest answer now please, but would an RS6 Avant be a 'sensible' choice (as sensible as a V8 can be!!)? We have a young family so want something reliable without regular and massive maintanence bills. We would be perfectly fine with similar daily running costs to the RS4.

Many Thanks,

Ash

Remember that the RS4 Avant, won't necessarily give you that much more room !
I think in cubic metres it's a fairly close call.
If you're looking to lug loads of "long stuff"... a 6 may be a better choice.
(also, the rear seats don't actually fold very flat at all)

A c5 and reliable should not be in the same sentence!!

Id got for a Skoda Superb Elegance 2.0 TDI 4x4 170PS and a trip to MRC

Cheers for the reply.

I basically need a boot that I can fit a dog cage into. I already have one that fits my (very very boring) B7 A4 Avant, so know it would fit an RS4 (and i'm assuming a '6). Its not so much the overall space available, but the added vertical space an avant offers over the saloon.

Cheers,

Ash

Ha, I dont think a Superb would wash with the Mrs (I do keep leaving pictures of Octavia VRS's lying about though.)

Realistically, we enjoy the RS4 and dont want to go to something ordinary.

We've found our RS4 to be very reliable, and when compared to my old L200 pickup, was positivly economical to run!! If an RS6 would be a labour of love, then it's not for us. Newer S6 any better?

Cheers,

Ash

I changed from a B7 S4 avant to an Octavia vrs and had 2 years of nothing but bother with it, I'm picking up my new S4 on Tuesday and the only thing I'll miss is the massive boot. Go for the RS4 and keep the mrs happy!

COMPARED to a B7 Avant, the C5 Avant boot is cavernous. We went from B6 S4 to RS6 C5, while most of the time having a B7 or B8 company car also - so from experience I would say that to fit a dog, luggage and perhaps a push buggy or similar in - you go for the A6 size every time.

In addition in our old B6 S4 when my son't rearward facing child seat was in the back, it would only go behind Mrs. D's seat - not mine. So the rear legroom is also substantially better.

The C6 S6 Avant is a nice car, but just not torquey enough for my liking.

THe C6 is huge compared to the RS4. I can drive my mate's RS4, but no one is getting in the back seat behind me, not even a child. I can get 5 large adults in the RS6 no problem. And their luggage.

But it doesn't sound like the RS6 is for you for all the other things you mentioned.

Personally if your wanting something reliable with low maintenance I'd consider a a6 le mans 3.0tdi and get map plus anything else you can. Air ride suspension maybe lol

Id find it hard to part with my rs6 and after going through a diverse history it has been the best car but unfortunately the most to repair with leaking drc, faulty gearbox and my need for speed for a stage 2.... However MasterCard can't buy everything and that's why I'll keep it for a long time!

Good luck
