Ok..just had cd autochanger replaced and on way back these 2 lights suddenly appeared after 10 or so mins.. i had just covered some awful road surfaces so don't know whether it was just coincidences pulled over and found out what it meant .restarted car and lights disappeared. either there is a fault or there isn't .its like having adolescent warning lights..what gives..do lights just come on and off like that

I have had this happen a couple of times. Completely randomly. Like you said, driving along and ping there they are. On both occasions there was no fault code stored and the lights went off after restarting.

These cars have a soul. They are like a woman that has a random sulk to remind you how tenuous your current trouble-free relationship is...

Just out of interest, you mention fault codes, if i wanted to check these myself, what do i need. Cables? Unit? A list of items would be greatly appreciated..Where do i plug it?

Best thing is to get a Vagcom from ilexa.co.uk.

They are not cheap, but will pay for themselves almost instantly

Plugs into the OBD2 port under the dash.

Many thanks 2X2 adapter or LT adapter

You don't need any adapter. The RS6, like every EU car after 2006, has an OBD2 port.

Both of these lights have just come on for me too so i'd be interested to see what you make of it?

They do go out if you restart the car and they only come on after 30mins or so driving.

I've booked my RS6 into QST next Tuesday as they are closest to me (60 miles) so will let you know how I get on too.

Just done over 85 miles since..no return of the lights..awooga..

Apologies if this is well wide of the mark, but if the ESP and low pad light come on together in a B6 it generally indicates a fault with the brake lights, typically the pedal switch, but could also be a bulb gone or even an ABS sensor error.

Maybe worth checking the brake lights are working if the lights come on again?

So all you did was restart the car and they've stayed off?

Normally mine will come back after 10-15 mins drive.

Quattrojames, you're bang on as that's exactly what QST said when I told them about it this morning. Both my rear brake lights are working so thinking ABS sensor or maybe the pedal switch... Will check once they come back on again

Lots of reasons for these lights coming on. The most common have been mentioned. Bizarrely they can also come on if you've got a problem with the MAFs or a lot of unmetered air getting into your engine (normally when MAFs are not seated correctly). Go figure.

Spitelli, I suggest that you have a real problem rather than the random lighting up issue. I'd suspect brake light switch in your case. They are dual circuit so even if the lights work, the other circuit might be faulty. Does your cruise control work?

Hi Shoppinit, yes my cruise control is working. Is brake light switch a failry common failure on these?

Update..after a quick (in terms of time spent ) run out the front pads worn sign comes on. the front discs and pads were changed (they said so) when i purchased the vehicle. I did have to do a couple of emergency stops today so I`m assuming its just because they were hot as I cant have gone through a pair of pads that quickly(3-400miles since purchase)I am going to leave the car idle for a few hrs to let the brakes cool down and see if it comes back or maybe its connected to the lights yesterday.
