Oil type again....

Yes, finally the time has come to replace my 5w30 mobil 505.01 oil for a 5w40 one (still incredible Audi recommends 5w30).
Ive heard we are often fooled about saying synthetic oil, but there are many stages of being synthetic i think...
So ive come across Redline 5w40 and Amsoil 5w40. Redline is a ester based oil (whatever that means, ive heard thats better for the cold starts and it applies a thicker oil film on the inner parts of the engine...)Both 505.01 spec...
Anyone experience with these types of oil?

As long as it's 5w40 VW505.01 and fully synthetic, I wouldn't worry about it.

Ester synthetic means they use group V base stocks. Group IV is PAO which is cheaper and most commonly used in "fully synthetic" oils. Group V oils are more temperature stable, and thus also they need less viscosity modifiers. They will handle higher temperatures before breaking down, and generally speaking will not degrade as quickly as lesser oils (depending on which additives are in the particular oil)
You have to remember that although you put 5w40 in your car, by the time you replace it on schedule it might not be rated any higher than a 0w30 anymore, also in terms of film shear strength there is significant degradation.
Ester oils do not apply a "thicker" film for that is impossible as that is determined by mechanical clearances. But it is "stronger" in terms of shear so you get a higher level of protection.

That said, I believe you can use pretty much any modern 5w30 or 5w40 oil in our engines. For peace of mind stick to the VAG spec, but realistically speaking you're well covered by modern oils. The stresses inside the V8TT are reasonable, mapped at 500bhp it's still only 62 horsepower per hole (big end bearing) same as a 4-cylinder engine making 250bhp. Replacing the oil at shorter intervals will make more difference in engine protection than choosing a particular type of 5w40.

That's true. If you can go inter-service oil changes, this would be ideal.

Stick with the oem oil filter.

(It's only 20 euro's.)

Just came across this...:

Most oil companies have been phasing out engine oil according to VW specification 50501 because of the low demand. This oil was once meant to be used in heavy duty Diesel engines but due to its outstanding shear stability under high temperature we decided to use it for the RS 6 V8 twin turbo engine. The main reason for this move was the position of the turbo chargers which are pretty far located from the engine block and therefore from the oil supplying pump. After driving under extreme conditions, e.g. with high speed or under high load for a longer period of time and very high outside temperature, the oil pressure could drop to low levels when going back to idle.
Theoretically, engine oil to VW specification 50500 is not able to compensate the attributes of VW 50501 but the viscosity range of 0W-40 will stabilize oil pressure when the engine and turbo chargers are extremely hot. Hence, potential engine damage is not really an issue if VW 50500 is being used and there is no necessity to do drain this oil immediately.

The official substitute of VW specification 50501 is actually VW 50400, even it is mostly available in 5W-30, for example but without official endorsement MOBIL 1 ESP FORMULA 5W-30. We recommend to use VW 50400 when the next engine oil service is due (every 15000 km).

Kind Regards & Merry Christmas

504.00? That doesn't make any sense. It's a much older spec oil. I thought that the 505.01 was superceded by 507.00

I had mine serviced at an Audi dealer yesterday. They put Yacco 505.01 in.

Seriously, 9 litres to do an oil change? I am asking as I am having to be a pikey and do a quick oil & plug change myself on the 6 and the 4 to save money while house buying. Going to pop down to the VW dealership to collect.

WTF Footers, got to ECP or halfords (if you have a trade card) and you will save loads of dollars over the Audi.
