Cost is a factor - they're circa £700 + the dreaded from Audi. It's more the fact that I keep telling myself 'someone must have one knocking around' that's stopping me going to Audi and coughing up. I'm going to take the damaged cooler off and see if i can get it sorted at a specialist - worth a try seeing as it'll be £850 for the original part
I'll give the ebay parts chap a call. Cheers

Are you in Ireland? Is that why the parts are so expensive? I thought these were more like £500 inc VAT; Which still isn't cheap...

I'm just outside of Swindon. According to Audi they are £670+ vat (I rounded up to 700 for dramatic effect).

Hi
I could not find a cooler when I needed to replace mine recently, and decided to play it safe with a new one from Audi, I got trade discount, not sure how much as it varies by item, ut wiht all the hose's it was still over 1k.
However not long after I saw this

Which got me thinking about using a radiator fabricator to see if it was a cheaper option? You might want to try this route. Wish I had explored it more at the time
http://www.ahfabrications.com/informati ... 62300hjq96 also these people refurb radiators not sure if that stretches to oil coolers

I would add that there was nothing wrong with my rad, but the oil cooler pipes that went to it had failed. However due to the different metals used in the joint with the rad, they had actually eaten in to each other, so despite carefully warming them up, and trying to loosen them we ended up splitting the joints with a die grinder etc, we were unable to salvage the rad, as there was no real thread left.
This is most likely why Audi stuck it down for a rad, because they knew the grief that lay ahead in trying to get the ruddy thing off.
Before you take it off, make sure you can get the filler undone on the transmission, we had to use a very long bar to crack it off, and also read up on the filling process

Good luck and keep us posted

Interesting post. I contacted AH once about the I/C but they weren't very interested in entering into a dialogue. Maybe they were having an off day. Might be worth trying again.
I'm loving the fluid motorunion coolers. I wonder if they sell them or was it just a proto...
I'm going to have to do mine soon since I've got the dreaded sweating from the pipe / rad connection.

If the joint is leaking
Shop it must be safer surely to try to alloy weld it up rather than risk screwing the cooler fittings undoing it?

Not a bad idea that. Although I'm not sure who I could find who could do that. Wouldn't like to attempt it myself.

Sorry, I bought this of him. its getting fitted tomo. I know your pain...
Why do you need a new one? is your old one broken? in what way? do you have one?
I am going to get my old one (see recent thread) refurbised by some pro's ad radiator rebuilds in nothern Ireland. If its sorted I may be able to help you out!

I wouldnt advise this, this is the route i was going to go down but thought it best to try building up the worn threads with aluminum weld and retap first. After seeing how the aluminim reacted to the weld, this is very unadvisable! esp welding to a different kind of metal!

Are you thinking of the intercoolers?

why not go down the fit two different oil an transmission coolers road

you can get two ten row coolers for about 80 quid and the pipes and fittings ain't gonna be over £50, yes i know that its a twin cooler but its only a twin one to help the auto fluid up to temp.this is the way im going as soon as mine gives up.
