thinking of installing an rns e soon.

will one from an A3 or A4 be suitable?

i assume the plastic trim can be changed to suit from the other models, bit new to playing with rns e, apologies if this is an obvious question , just trying to buy the right thing first time, so i dont end up with a pile of them i have to hide from the mrs's

cheers

Electronically and mechanically they are all the same except the very latest ones, but they have different fascias. You need to get an A6 one as the A3 and A4 ones will not fit in your dash properly. A6 ones are harder to come by as they stopped making them in 2005 and command a higher price. You can get A6 fascias but they cost approx £130 and are awkwark to change apparently. :audibash:

get one for A6, part number 4B0 035 192 P

you'll find some on ebay, around 600€

i just did it on my RS6, fits perfectly

you'll need a fakra diversity adapter and a RNS-E adapter from kufatec

Can you keep the existing CD changer?

yep, with the kufatec adapter, everything is working (although i didn't test the phone as i got it out to make room in the armrest)

but, as there is a but, you will need to choose between 2 types of adapter depending on which functionnality you want to keep or to work

you can take the "normal" adapter, but you'll need to connect CAN bus high and low from behind the dash (a topic should be somewhere to explain that)
but you'll have trouble to get a proper time at the GPS, can't synchronise properly
and you will keep the display in the odb

or you can take the CAN bus simulator adapter, a little more expensive
with that, you won't need to dismantle half of your dash, play with connectors and wires
you'll get a proper time in the GPS
BUT you will loose the display in the obd

i fit a RNS-E in my previous RS4 b5 and in my actual RS6 C5 and in both cases i went for the CAN bus simulator adapter

in a RS6, the fitting took me 30 min, including 20 minutes to fit it back properly as there is not so much room to fit the adapter and the wires behind the RNS-E

after few settings with the Vag Com, everything is working (CD charger, radio, MP3 on SD card, nav) and looks OEM
and it cost me less than 700€
