Rns-e retrofit

Post by marv8 » Wed Jun 29, 2011 9:04 pm

Evening all,
I have done a few searches on here and google but can't find an "idiots guide" to replacing rns-d with rns-e!
I bought this adapter set off fleabay http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewit ... 0675486777
and popped the head unit out for a look today but could not get the central 32 pin adapter in the back of the new unit and also could not see anywhere the circular plug would fit on the new unit?

Sorry if this is covered off somewhere but could not find for looking!

Thought it would be plug and play but not having it - maybe I am being a <beep> but Defo issues with 2 cables?
I searched on this forum and on the general one, got to page 12 and started to loose the will to live. Sure Craigyb must have posted it somewhere??? Only google ones I can find are concerto/symphony to rns-e and seem to involve a lot of splicing of wires, not keen on cutting stuff as no idea what I am doing!!

Go to:

http://www.kufatec.de

And follow the easy menu to get the harness and wiring adapters you need - I had no probs with these and then you only need to plumb in a can-low and can-high wire.

Here is a useful guide. It's for going from a Symphony to RNS-E, but it should be easier going from RNS-D to RNS-E.

The 32pin connector has a lever lock which needs lowering first before the connetor will go into the RNS-E. You will find this at the top of the plug.

Circular plug is your old TV tuner and this will not fit the new RNS-E. You need to upgrade your tuner for this to work.

Your cable adaptors are not correct for a RS6, but can still be used. You need to swap over the Telephone and canbus connections.

Follow the RNS-D to RNS-E mappings in the PDF here:

Many thanks all - tempted to give it a go myself but would probably mess it up!

Golf, did your 32 pin plug straight in the back of rnse or did you need an adapter? On the guide Shop posted above there is nothing connected to 32 pin socket? I did try with the clip folded up but plug seemed slightly too large?

If its the Quadlock connector you are talking about (large square coupling housing smaller connectors) then the clip needs to be opened downwards down before it will slot in.

Sorry golf, did not make that very clear, its the plug just above the laser code sticker that seemed a bit too big (thought it was 32 pin).

Trying to post image but first effort so stick with me here - not sure if this pic is a6 rns-e but same fittings

Thats the TV connector for the RNS-E. It wont connect or work with you existing tuner or cabling.

Thanks for the help guys, decided to not risk the ebay cable so bought one from Kufatec, should be here any day now - still however have one more question........
The fiting instructions from Kufatec state under step 4 I need to connect a wire to the window relay? I know something may be lost in translation but I have not read anything about this in previous threads? Anyone done this and is it difficult to route the cable without taking much of the trim off?

Instructions for reference (hope Kufatec dont mind)

Connection instructions for the RNSE adaptor
The adapter is custom made for your car. Before commencing work you must check the adapter's options on the invoice are correct.
For cars equipped with Chorus, Concert or Symphony Radio, the upgrade is very easy.

1. Remove the plugs from the old radio and connect them to the adaptor
2. Connect the adaptor to the RNSE unit
3. For the Audi A3 model 8P connect the diagnostic management wire (grey) to the diagnostic plug pin 7 and solder it to the wire. For the Audi A3 model 8P the coiled grey wire should be connected to pin 7 of the (pink) diagnostic readout socket fitted above the driver’s ankles in the foot well. The diagnostic socket is normally used by the OBD diagnostics.
4. For the Audi A6 model 4B you need to connect the white wire (gala signal) to pin 1 of the window washer relay (double size relay which is located on the driver side foot well), The gala signal is used by the automatic speed related volume control feature built into the RNSE unit.
5. If antenna diversity is available the brown coloured housing must be removed and connected to pin 1 of the antenna adapter (if ordered). Make sure the connector is locked.
6. Connect the double plug of the antenna converter to the RNSE and the singleplug to the vehicle antenna cable
7. If the small Satellite Navigation system (BNS) is built in the car together with the phone setup you need to connect the following pins on the 20 pole connector (which is located in the rear):
pin 13 to pin 16
pin 15 to pin 19

For cars equipped with the RNSD:
1. Use the above instruction 1-6.You can skip step 5.
2. As the infotainment canbus system is not fitted you need to connect the canhi and canlowires.
Black/white = canhi
Black/yellow = canlo
The easiest thing would be to connect these wires to the instrument cluster.
(A4 8E = blue connector, pin 20 = canhi,pin 19 = canlo)
(A6 4B = grey connector, pin 5 = canhi,pin 6 = canlo)

Thanks again

You don't need to get the gala signal from the dashpod or the washer relay, it already goes to the RNS-D.

Look at the pdf that golfather linked to see what pin it goes to on the RNS-D.

Also you can get the can-hi and can-lo from the connector that goes to the TMC Canbus module behind the knee bolster. Saves you messing around behind the instrument cluster.

EDIT: can-hi and lo is already going to the RNS-D (see same document).

You can sell the TMC module is you want. They are quite sought after. Same goes for your tuner. It'll be no use to you now.

You cannot use CAN Hi and CAN Lo from the RNS-D plug. That is not true CAN, it is for infotainment and comes from the TMC module. You will need to tap into the true CAN connection at the TMC module.
