Stelvio pass

Right, I said I would and I will.
Yes I know a C5 RS is probably not the best car to do this pass with but I think the brakes will hold out.
DK has mentioned the last weekend of April would be good and it is looking good but that early in May could see a lot of snow on the pass. Eurotunnel short stay saver is £42-£53 outbound and £42-£44 inbound. Leave Fri 29th April - return Tues 03 May (I booked the Tues off long ago).
Accommodation shouldn't be too much of an issue unless you want a locked compound overnight for cars. I ain't that bothered.
Having Stelvio as a main event isn't the safest of plans either. The pass has become very crowded in the last 3 years (I wonder why?). It gets clogged with camper vans motorbikes and cyclists. The pass is also pretty narrow and after the winter the surface may not be that great. It'll be luck of the draw if a clear run (up or down) is achieved. In that light, there are a load of different routes and some nearby tunnels that will be raped by a loud RS or two. There are also a heaps of nice driving roads around the lakes and lesser known passes in the Alps.

I would be careful going that early, there will be significant snow at that time of year and ice.
I went to the southern Alps in June and there was still lots of snow in the higher passes.
Just something to consider.

Yeah I thought as much. 'Tis a shame as there aren't many other times during the year I can go. I don't have a lot of alpine experience so it could be very long journey to the scene of an accident.

How about a trip to the Pyrenees, instead? Less far to wreck your car
I like the D918. Less challenging but still ace fun; Very pretty. Did this drive recently and had a huge laugh.

so does that mean you've booked it Bam ?
seems like end of May min for the snow to clear
My plan was to go on the dates you mentioned ... not booked the euro tunnel yet
Not sure what to do now !?

I've not booked the Eurotunnel yet but I'd like to take that long weekend to get the <beep> out of here. I might look at some other drives. Thanks Ben, that'll go high on my list.

The pass wont be open that early in the season. It is one of the last passes to open. The only exception is when the Giro goes over it and then they make a special effort to clean it.
It is a wonderful pass, but not ideal for the RS6, I live nearby and avoid it with the audi. Last time I went over it with a Clio and even then the corners were all first gear and I couldn't get around unless running wide! In saying that it is a must see, but a slow drive. There are some wonderful roads around there, and great for some exciting driving, Bernina, Albula, both in Swiss but again don't open till later in the year.

They try to have it open end of may, but depends on weather conditions. Summer tyres are ok and legal, if it is snowing that bad the road will be closed

The TTS is great fun
Miles better than the S3
It feels like a go kart and is so much more chuckable
I've got the Sports button which firms up the mag ride, sharpens throttle, louder zorst note and sharper steering .... Makes a huge difference when pressing
I get it sliding at every opportunity cos it literally is like a go kart!!

Hi guys,
I live in Zurich and have also found that the Stelvio is not ideal, especially since the Top gear review, way too much traffic!!
My favoutrite drive around the swiss alps is definately the Furka pass, due to the nice road surface and the lack of traffic.
