Coolant temp gauge goes up on idle

Post by paul_23 » Mon Oct 18, 2010 8:12 am

My temp gauge always used to stick to 90 dead on all the time, even in 50 degrees ambient. The oil temp fluctuates, sometimes up to 110.

Last week or so I have noticed the coolant temp will climb above 90 and then return to 90 when I pull away. Today it was the worst I have seen and it went to the right of the 0 on 90 and was doing it every time I pulled up at some lights.

Is this a switch/sender problem or a thermostat problem, or normal??

I will plug in VAGCOM tonight to see if there are any faults.

Cheers

Doesn't sound like thermostat. Sounds more like your rad isn't coming on or turning fast enough. Vagcom can log faults for radiator fan, but not necessarily. Have a look under the bonnet if you can.

The water temperature guage is a bit of a joke. It'll read 90 anywhere between 80 and 100°. If it moves then it means your water temperature is seriously out. I have rarely seen mine go off 90° and then only after very hard driving.

Already checked the rads and both fans seem to be going OK. Will check the vagcom too...

I agree with the temp gauge issue as I have logged coolant temps over 100 on the vagcom and the gauge kept at 90 so when it did increase this week I thought something is wrong...

The only other thing I can think of is a sticking thermostat. Hopefully that's not the case.

No faults on VAGCOM found related to coolant. However, last nt I was idling and the temp gauge started to climb - the idle seemed to be rough and struggling. It climbed to past the 0 on the 90 and then I squeezed the accelerator (in Park) to increase revs. After 30 secs the temp dropped down to 90 again.
Do you think this suggests the water pump might be on way out and struggles to pump the water on idle? The belts were changed last year but I think they said the water pump was fine so it was not replaced - flippin typical...but might be able to get it on warranty....

I like your thinking. Water pump could explain what you're seeing. I had a similar problem on a golf, but the other way round. At high revs, the pump would cavitate and not circulate water.

I've never tried this on an RS6, but if you open the expansion tank you should be able to see the squirt coming back from the radiator. If it's non existant at idle but flows at higher revs (you'll need an assistant) then that gives weight to your water pump idea.

Update:

Temp fluctuation got worse and was always slightly over 90 even on a steady drive at 60mph. It never overheated thankfully.

Car is in at Audi dealer and they confirm it is the water pump that is faulty. They will do the pump and thermostat for about GBP650 and it should be covered by the warranty policy I have. Even though the belt and tensioners were done 19months ago I guess I should get them done too again at my cost?? How much are the belt and tensioners?
