I recently had my gear box rebuilt and soon after the engine management light popped on with fault code:

17748 P1340 001

Camshaft Position Sensor-G40, Engine Speed Sensor-G28 Incorrect allocation.

My local non specialist garage checked the wiring at the back of the engine, all correct, are now buffled and are considering changing both sensors but with no guarantee to fix the prob.

Any suggestions out there or is it an expensive main dealer option now

I could be completely wrong, but I seem to remember reading that the connectors for the G40 and the G28 are the same and can be accidentally swapped when you take the engine out.

Just reading up a bit on this problem. It looks like it's the error you get when the valve timing gets out of whack. This can happen if the timing belt is installed incorrectly. Was it just gearbox work you had done? Could be the variable valve timing that's broke, but if the engine has come out for your gearbox, the most likely explanation is a broken wire / connector on one of those sensors.

Just had the timing belt, idlers, tensioner, thermostat and water pump replaced today (£1200) hoping it was the timing that was out...... The dreaded management light went off after resetting, half a mile down the road, its back with avengence!!! THE FAULT IS STILL ON!!!

Problem is, if the timing was off to begin with then just changing the belt wouldn't necessary fix it if they locked the cams in the wrong position. This is especially true if they didn't use the right tool. Who did it and how?

I'd get it checked again mate.
