advice for prospective rs6 newbie purchase

Post by ijs » Sun Feb 14, 2010 8:15 pm

Dear All, I see the excellent & well thought out discussions on this forum & wonder if someone could comment on what I am looking at for a first rs6:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1277367.htm

My plan is to run, what has been for a long time my dream car, for 12m then see how we get on together...

Appreciate any input.

Thx

Ian

the car you're looking at looks a cracking example. It has been on the market since 7th sept - i know, as i was looking for mine at the time. It looks great, but was certainly overpriced back then at 24,995. back then it had an audi warranty until dec 09, but unfortunately not now.
It's worth checking out, and daytona is still my personal favourite....

I viewed and went out in this car (as a passenger) when I was looking for my '6. It's completely mint - the best standard example of ten or more that I viewed. Paintwork and interior were immaculate. Bizarrely the DRC was better than most cars I've been in - and that was before he had it replaced under warranty!

The seller seemed genuine but I just couldn't justify the kind of money he was looking for. The cherry on the cake is that he drove like a granny until I egged him on to push it a bit - I reckon it's had an easy life!

My only hesitance was that he was reluctant to let me to scan for fault codes - nothing sinister, he just wasn't comfortable hooking a laptop up to his pride and joy. Said he would be happy for me to scan as a final condition of sale, which seemed fair enough.

Will make a great purchase for someone I reckon.

Hmmmmm! Do i sell mine and go for a lower mileage model like the one above?
Thing is, the RS6 is a pure gamble. They can fail at anytime, not when mileage dictates. Its a tricky situation.

If you have the funds then i'd say go for it, the car in the ad has to be one of the last remaining sub 40k cars on the road. Looks very loved.

Hmmm, think about it eddie,

Yours is sorted, no DRc issues, mapped etc.

You would be selling yours, gett maybe 16-17, adding 5 then have to eventually spen another 1.5 on getting the drc replaced (because you would) and another 500 on a map (because you would) and as you say, its not a milage thing, but, its around the 40k mark and thats when a number of GB's have started to go. You know your car........

thing about the plus though, just my thoughts, is that its a future (or maybe even now) collectors item, being so rare

I'd love to buy it, but I'd ruin it! I've put 4,300 miles on my RS 4 since buying it on the 5th Dec!

Yeah, thats what changes my mind every day. Mine is so sorted that you would think it had only done 10k, not 90k!:

The paint has all been redone in the past 12 months under paint warranty, new carpets all round 2 years ago (cos im anal about it), leather is immaculate, new 'plus' rims, gearbox serviced, new headlights, new mirrors, new windscreen, new I/C and hoses, new alternator, new rad and pipes, miltek going on Apr 15th (thanks DaveRS6), PSS9's at Xmas, Pioneer nav. Its better than new. And i drive like my Gran to keep it looking / driving that way.

If only i could zap the clock back to 10k.

yup,

I just roughly calculated I've spent near enough £1k on Fuel alone in my RS 4 since 5th Dec....thats about twice as much as I would have spend had I kept my A2 tdi...luckily I've tracked the book price ( :FIREdevil: ) and despite the extra 4k miles, it hasnt depreciated, otherwise those 4k miles could have cost a <beep> load more.....oh an i need new tyres!

:bash: :boohoo:

Better the devil you know, I say.

I'd feel much more comfortable buying a car which is known on here, on the basis that the history is more transparent and the previous owner is less likely to hide any defects. But any new car purchase is a risk, and I generally prefer to invest in what I have than in a whole new bunch of unknowns.

Saying that, I can't think of a car that wasn't in better condition when I sold it than when I bought it: sure, I may have put 60k on the clock but I just can't bring myself to drive with a fault code (even one that might not be obvious without a scan) or a faulty DIS or a failing MAF ... and I'm sure many folk on here are the same.
