RS6 C5 Engine Oil Choice

Post by justin1230smith » Mon Dec 21, 2009 9:48 pm

Hello,

Having searched the various posts here and on rs6.com and having emailed 1 UK Audi Dealer and just got back from driving to another can I ask the group for a bit of a steer on engine oil, not so much as a what do you think is best but more of an explanation for all the differences I have found !

My RS6 manual (page 217) says, "Use VW 505 01 5W-40" and that's what I wanted to do... not so simple it appears !

From googling around I think the part code would be G 052 167 A2/A6 ?

I got my car back from an Audi "Specialist" today (I don't trust my dealer sadly) and the oil he has used is Q8 Formula Advanced 10W-40 which had VW505.00 on the back. You can see it here

http://www.q8oil.co.uk/productlibrary.asp?OBJ_ID=26509

I did challange this as I paid my bill and was told the Q8 rep has written to say that is fine in ALL Audis !?

I have noticed on the website they quote their Q8 Formula Excel 5W-40 as being VW 505.01 so maybe he just used the wrong one ?

So first question - Should I be driving it with 505.00 in it instead of 505.01 ?

I thought I would ask my local Audi main dealers, BOTH said they only use 1 oil for the cars they service, ALL the cars they service, be the car on a fixed service internal or extended, it is Castrol SLX Longlife III 5W30.

On the bottle it said it was 504 00 / 507 00 ! - I questioned them and they said that was what they were told to use.

I asked what the Audi UK Service bulletins said and he said they didn't get them but they might be on the computer somewhere !

Then how can I find U.S. ones on the www ? - Do we not have them in the UK ? - The "best" one I can find is a US one dated April 6, 2009

(A useful document that lists oil that VW Audi recognise nevertheless)

So, I am confused, I have read threads with people suggesting what they use but can any help explain the questions I raise above ? :( I'm a bit confused/worried :(

Speak to oilman. He is very knowledgable.

Audi seem to be trying to create a universal oil (as per your dealer's statement) so the VW 505.01 code will now be superseded by a newer code, enabling them to use just one oil in the workshop with obvious benefits. Personally, I don't care if my oil will protect PD or FSI engines and I would rather the oil protected my engine than marginally improved Audi's quoted MPG figures for 2009 so I have always stuck with an oil with the correct SPECIFICation for my car.

I've used Miller XFS 5w-40 for the last three Oil services and found that the engine uses less oil between services than when I used Castrol SLX or Mobil one.
I think the 507 code refers to long life or extended service period oils, but I wouldn't consider extending the service interval for the RS6 beyond the normal recommended mileage / time interval, in which case 505.00 is perfectly adequate.
