Gearbox problem?

Hi All, how do you tell if your gearbox is on the way out?
Was on mway earlier at approx 80. When i hoofed it (not to kick down), the revs went to 4000, then it seemed to hunt as if it had gone down a gear, then took off as usual.
Tried the same in "manual" and it seemed to do the same thing although still said it was in 5th, then went down to 4th anyway? Seems to do the same thing in "manual" in the lanes aswell?
Also if you've got your foot in at 120-130 (on the private track i was on earlier) and you lift off, how much would you expect the revs to drop by?
Sorry if these are obvious questions, but 1. i'm paranoid, 2. i'm now unemployed and worry, and 3. never had a performance auto before.......lol
Any ideas guys?
If it is shot, how much to replace? Guide price grizz?
Be nice as i'm unemployed now.......lol

If you are in manual mode, it shouldn't change down unless...
1) you've hit the kick-down button
OR
2) Revs too low ( <1000)
Is you car chipped? With gearbox chip?

If you hit the torque limit on the box, it'll change down to "protect" itself (or annoy tuners

). Might be that with the cold weather your car is producing a bit more power than usual and you're tickling the torque limiter.
If you were having gearbox problems, I would expect to experience problems after changing gear. Say going from 2nd to 3rd, having the revs go up and then the power engaging suddenly giving you a kick in the RS as the clutches finally bite.
If you've got a vagcom, then you could log what's going on with the box to see if there really is a problem or whether you've just got a case of the paranoias.

Could that be what the apparant "kickdown" and apparant hunting is when i hoof it in 5th? Slipping clutches that re-engage?
I think it has been chipped, but not sure.
Anyone with a vag com free in kent on sunday at all?

Have you had a gearbox service? If not then get it done. Mine was messing about and had it done and it was like a new box.

On a standard box (unmapped): If you are just plodding along at mid-revs and then just floor it (past the 1st pressure kick down switch) then the car will drop a gear and probably feel like it is hunting a little. If the revs are really low, ie you are in 4th at 35mph and you floor it then the car will drop to 2nd via 3rd, which will feel like forever. But thats normal, and very annoying as the whole point is to get a shift on immediately.
If your box was on its way out then i'd suggest that the problems would be more severe. A gearbox service may be of use to you if your box needs freshening up on the inside. It has certainly helped others on this forum.
Remember also to let the box warm up before putting the power down, the 'clutch' engages quicker and more efficiently when warm.

I was getting worried in another thread with the delay for the clutch to engage in the cold weather
I think if when warm and the clutch plates slip loads then the 'box clould be damaged. That tends to happen mostly on remapped cars with >750Nm etc. Also, it is usual that from time to time it does make a hash of the gear selection.
Doesn't sound broken to me.

I have to agree with the service option, mine was jumping about and obviously causing concern as to the repair cost, I got Grizz to service it and it's been fine since

Was serviced probably bout 5k ago by grizz, it could have been doing it for a while, i'ver not really noticed it before as for the last few months i've been doing lots of very short journeys. Only really took it on a run this last couple of days.
Anyone free tomo (sun) with a vag com in kent anywhere at all?
Cheers all
Paul.

The hunting gears between 5th and 4th is common and it is the gearbox ECU getting confused/trying to protect itself. The remap TCUs prevent this.....

Paul, what's the latest on yours? How's the new TC working out?

So it's unlikely to be slipping in the TC or the clutches?

The hunting behaviour is a well known phenomenom. I was told that it was only put there to annoy chip tuners.

Mine hunts gears more than before so I assume this is due to the higher torque the better TC gets thru.
MTM ECU AND TCU upgrade imminent......
