rattle from front wheel ''area''

Post by philroach » Fri Sep 11, 2009 8:01 am

Have had a rattle for some time now , that seems to come from the front drivers side wheel area , i can hear it when window is down

have had h&r's with arb's fitted by the grizzmeister , o/s/f lower bearing arm renewed , n/s/f lower bearing arm checked and cleared , and both CV gaiters replaced....

still have rattle which comes up over short sharp bumps in the road , or in the case of my unmade road , rattles a lot . Sounds like a pair of domino tiles being shaken together, best i can describe it as , and i havent lost any domino tiles either !!!
any ideas would be much appreciated
cheers
phil

Seriously - have you checked the door/window? Not had a problem on the RS, but one of my SAAB's sounded rattly with window open till I realised that it was the window mechanism itself which was slightly loose, but could only move when the window wasn't shut!

does it "knock" / "click" on full lock or when turning the wheel. . .

Are all the exhaust mounts / fittings present & tight? Should be reasonably easy to check.

everything seems tight exhaust wise , and is fine on full lock , just a little rub on the inside of the wheel arch mud cover thingy , grizz has seen that and says its normal , so there is something else causing the problem , dammit

i had a similar thing a while ago, kept getting this rattle noise on divers side, every time went over a little bump or big one, this metallic rattle would appear, then one day my 7 year old was in the back and i asked her if she heard the noise, to which she replied "yes dad thats the £1 coin i put in the back door ashtray thats rattling around" she took the £1 out and the noise went. The little moo. just check to see if anything in the ashtray, yu never know!!

Mine had very similar but more of a squeak that could only be heard with the windows down. Local garage said it was one of the suspension/steering joints and was a common Audi problem.

They made a pin prick hole in the knuckle joint and squirted grease in and the noise has gone :O) Saved buying a new part.

I've just had the same problem. I couldn't find it at first so just dismissed it. Then noticed a slight vibration on acceleration which disappeared when coasting. Have just been under the car today and found the nearside inner cv boot has split and when you grab the driveshaft and wiggle it it rattles. I'm hoping that replacing the cv joint will sort both problems and that I won't have to resort to replacing the driveshaft as well.
