Engine cutout on motorway.. ?

Post by rs_matt » Tue Jul 07, 2009 3:34 pm

On the M27 today, both the engine management light and ESP warning lights lit up, power completely lost, had to coast to hard shoulder. Once I turned engine off and restarted was fine & warnings went out, but obviously something wrong.

Any ideas ?

Plugging in the VAGCOM there were two warnings:
2 Faults Found:
17861 - Exhaust Gas Temp Sensor 1 (G235): Open or Short to Plus
P1453 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent
17743 - Engine Torque Monitor 2: Control Limit Exceeded
P1335 - 008 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
Readiness: 0000 0000

Checking it in with Camberly Audi tomorrow (they are a top dealer by the way) as car is under Audi warranty

17861 is engine out! book a loan car.
17743 has many causes inc map sensor maf sensors throttle body boost control coolant temp sensor , sounds like the dealer is going to be busy, nice if you post a fix when you get it back! good luck

Do you mean that the engnie cut out? Or powered down?

If the engine cut out then that's really weird.

I have experienced exactly the same symptons over a 18 month period.

First happened near the end of a 250 km run.

initially thought to be faulty brake pressure sensor switch shutting off the ABS and then the mangement system.- apparently a common problem with a lot of modern ecm cars with ABS- a mercedesand toyta camry were in garage for repairs at the time with same "problem".

replaced the brake pressure sensor switch and no problem for ~12 months.

Then same sympton reappeared near end of another long 250km.

Diagnosed by dealer as lean mixture reading, and MAF "O" ring seals leaking. Not yet replaced.

Engine still has full power and sympton has not reappeared, but I am sure it will - probably onnext long run and after warranty expires next month.

this cut out and reset ok sympton has never shown up driving around the city in the last 3 years. Very frustrating and local dealer perplexed. :?: :?:

Actually more of a power down now that you mention it - i.e. started losing speed and accelerator did nothing, couldn't accelerate again until I'd pulled over and stopped/started the engine.

Re: ABS sensor switch, that is interesting - checking the VAG logs again there was one other error.

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 4B0-614-517.lbl
Part No: 4B0 614 517 AD
Component: ESP 5.7 RS 6 2310
Coding: 06697
Shop #: WSC 00000

1 Fault Found:
18256 - Please check DTC Memory of Engine Controller
P1848 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

The fine chaps at Camberly Audi have these VAG readings too so hopefully they'll diagnose and get everything fixed up.

Thanks for the replies & info all.

I look forward to hearing what Camberly Audi say is the cause and the remedy.

On reflection, the engine did not cut out- go dead. In my case the engine tacho just dropped to~800 rpm and engine would not respond to accelerator with ESP orange triangle lighting up my day!

Last time, it did this, I didn't pull over to the side of the ride. Just slipped car into neutral, turned engine off and quickly restarted engine. Back into drive and on my way.- passenger did not notice this action. You have to watch the temporary loss of power steering and braking, though, before the engine restarts.

damned inconvenient and frustrating for such a fine car.

ps i also have the dreaded DRC "clunk in the trunk" at 59,000kms, but not affecting the handling yet. KW3 or PSS9 on the way.

Had you just reactivated a stored cruise control speed? Mine goes into limp mode with the 17743 code when I do this. It is an electrical gremlin, and the fix is to just avoid using cruise control to accelerate upto motorway speeds in 5th gear.

Actually I might have been - will see what they come back with when I pick the car up. Is this a "known" gremlin or indicative of something else wrong ? Thanks for the info

Mine's never done this and I use cruise all the time.

car not remapped.

but now that you mention it, the problem has happened four times when on cruise control and once when not on cruise control.

twice when restoring a cruise control setting and after that twice when driving along on cruise control.

Its called a soft limp, the car has sensed a problem and has gone into saftey mode, once you stop or ease right down, if the problem has gone, the limp will switch off. Mine did it a few times and it was an overboost fault (a bout 2 months after a remap) changed the N75 and the Maf which had never been done, and all was fine, not done it again since- 15 months now.
It's all Bollox.
