hi guys,

hopefully someone can give me a quick answer

Iv been reading navplus.us to try and understand
but
RNSE install, I know I need to VAG com the car for it to understand it has RNSE

but is the rest of the install purely plug and play if I have the correct harness, or do I have to remove instrument cluster for GALA wire?

im confused cos those pesky Americans on navplus.us never got the RNS-D as it was only Europe so all their install guides go from Symthony II, but surely our RNSD has the speed wires on one of the plugs?

Iv got the RNSE installed in the car and works fine for music and GPS works on maps, but not got the dashpod working, or illumination or speed etc.

any help is greatly recieved

ps. I have emailed CraigyB for price to complete install but no reply as yet, but if I can do it myself then that'l be extra money for Milltek !

if you got the correct witing harnes, you have everything you need. the wire to the cluster is provided.

You don't need to remove the instrument cluster to get the DIS info working (though you usually did in an RNS-D retrofit). However you do need to do some coding with VAG-COM, so that's probably why it's not working.

You need to hook up your RNSE to true CAN.
This is NOT in any wiring loom, and therefore you need to tap into this.

Best way is to tap into this under the drivers dash panel at the TMC unit next to the centre console.
Its easily accessible and dont have to mess about removing the dash.

Once your CAN is connected, your RNSE will have auto ignition on/off, illumination and your dash will start working.

thanks for the replies guys; i was reluctant to post about this as I know there's a wealth of information out there so didnt want to waste any bodies time, but i found myself getting confused as my electrical skills arent so hot.

So, i've established I dont need to pull out my dash and with the correct wiring it can be sorted.

Thanks Golfather for your comments, if you wouldnt mind helping abit more, in that when you say I need to tap into the TRUE CAN, how will I identify this to know what to tap in to, and then once I know that, can you advise which pins this should feed into the RNSE

If I can do this myself I'll put together a true Idiots guide and I am truely an idiot

the easies way is to go back to nacplus.us and download the instructions posted there - these are large pdf files full of photos. if you can't find thses, pm me and i'll email you a copy.

Under the Dash you will see a TMC unit:



The connector has this setup:


Pin 2 is CAN Low
Pin 3 is CAN High



The connector on the RNSE is:

Pin D9 is CAN High
Pin D10 is CAN Low

Connect these up and job done !



You can also download a useful PDF which has direct mappings for RNS-D to RNS-E pins, to make sure the rest of the wiring adaptor you have is correct:

The CAN hi and lo wires are already available behind the RNS-D unit in the 30-way AV connector (the end pins, can't remember the numbers).

You just need to isolate the old TMC unit (it is not needed with RNS-E) link out the CAN IN and OUT pins at the TMC unit plug: link 2–8 and 3–9 and then link the co-ax aerial leads together.

I can get the exact pin numbers later if you need them?

Indeed CAN is already used by the RNSD so is already there in the 36 pin connector.
However this is not TRUE CAN and is INFOTAINMENT CAN so will not work with the RNSE unless you bypass the TMC as you have described above
But I prefer my method by running dedicated CAN lines so that you can revert back to the RNS-D if required without opening everything up again (eg when trading the car in etc)

CAN wires can be found behind the instrument cluster; grey connector pins 5 and 6.

wahoo ! i've done it, successfully located the TMC with the help of google and connected up the true can to the RNSE.

PROBLEM thou, the Nav has gone a bit crazy, the GPS isnt lined up with the maps and so when i move the arrow doesnt follow the roads on the maps. . . before I'd sorted the CAN issue it did?

Is this a coding problem or could I have buggered something up?

scrap that, its all working now, god the RNSE is so much better than the D. . .

so it all seem to be working fine now, do I still need to VAG COM the car ?

ooh, two questions:
1. where is the TV tuner located so I can remove it
2. how do I remove the TMC ? I can see once bolt, but that doesnt seem to release it?
