Well i had my oil level chaecked to see if that was the problem.

Nope all ok

Drove 60 miles to a man who knows all about autos !

He tells me its common and that he did a couple of BMW's that use the same box last month.

Apparently a piston seal fails and when cold they don't pressurise and it causes funny changes slippages and emergency mode.

Quoted £1500 for box recon £100 oil and £265 remove and refit. Takes a week as the box goes off for recon. or repair the box at £900 still need oil and remove - refit.

12 months on recon 3 months on repair option.

ideas anyone ?

the hp24 is a common gearbox with bmw, but the "a" model as in hp24a, is the awd derivative unique to audi (and range rover iirc). so the guy is right, as the guts of the gearbox (planetary sets oil pump, valve body etc) is common

agreed.
new box from Audi is 3k, plus fitting comes to around 5k in total.
so if youre getting a reconed one for 1500, its a bargain!

oh dear just read elsa win and Grizz must be the most experienced man at this !

Engine out job and loads more.

So the dilema is do I get a firm quote and then say oops did you realise it is engine out and then print off elsa instructions. or do i tell them first for them to then say -- thats 1 million pounds please or -- we don't want to do it.

Correct, i've had 2 done under warranty & both times the overall bill was around the £10K mark (i'm sure being warranty the billing costs are slightly higher  ).

Defo engine out as i'll never forget seeing my car with it's V8 dangling on a winch in front of my car, made me puke in my mouth
