have been reading all your experiences over the last year or so, and basically I want one..!!

Will be looking for a 2003-ish avant with around 50k to 60k miles. Hoping to pay around 22k GBP for a nice example with a decent warranty.

I can wait a few months, my questions are:-

- when is the new RS6 due out?

- do you think I stand a chance at this price when the new beast arrives on the roads??

- and is there going to be more examples to choose from?

In all honesty, I don't see the bottom falling out of the value of the (old) RS6, other than normal depreciation.
Realistically, the sort of buyer who had the money and inclination to buy them new in the first place has almost certainly moved on to something else by now, and the market for them now is the enthusiast who couldn't dream of buying one when they were new.
I know I fall firmly into that camp, having more than doubled my planned budget when my own RS6 came to my attention.
I'm most certainly not the target market for the new one; I'll look at one in 3 or 4 years.

In short, I don't think many current RS6 owners will be trading them in for the new version, so I don't see there being much of an upheaval in the market for the originals.

I agree with most of what you say Rovi.

But don't forget that the C5 RS6 production didn't finish until 2004 so I do think we'll be seeing some existing owners trading up to the new RS6. Whether this will have much impact on C5 resale values is yet to be seen, but it is normally the case that the prices of the "old model" do drop shortly after the launch of a new model.

The new RS6 was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September (2007). The avant is due in the UK showrooms in April (2008), with the saloon to follow. Whether there will be a Plus version this time is still a matter of speculation I believe.

You will be able to pick up one for that.

I got mine 2 months ago 2003 avant with 50k and I got it 23.5k through the trade. It was retailing for 25.5k

have been looking at adverts and prices for a few months now, and they're still just out of my budget.

if the new one arrives on the roads in April, I guess May / June and i could be in for a hot motor...!

Apart from the couple of issues talked at lenght in these boards, this is the most amazing car I have ever driven. You sound a bit like myself. Cars like these have just been out of reach until they loose their money but be warned, it is still a super car with big running costs.

Don't spend ever last penny on it say quite a few thousand for the running costs (esp petrol if you are wanting to drive it like it should be!)

Also buy warranty from someone like warranty direct for peace of mind because if something really goes then expect bills like 2-4k!

After three years of ownership I've now got used to the costs, will be strange when i change. 911 and AMV8 costs are sooo much less for servicing, particularly cambelt!!

thanks for the advice. I've read a few posts here about running costs - servicing, brakes, tyres, warranty issues, fuel, etc. And I'm ready for supercar-style figure - just hoping to control them to reasonable levels.

the RS6 will be a 2nd (if not 3rd) car in the family and will be used for "special" occasions. I expect to cover only around 6k miles pa. So the cost of consumables can be carefully controlled. The warranty should take care of any large unexpected bills. So the depreciation is the only "unknown". If I buy after the new model arrives at around 22k, then I would hope that depreciation can be at (what I find) reasonable levels.

I've previously owned an S3 and an S2, but the RS6 is a significant step up from either of these, so just trying to do my homework in advance.

I am being totally serious when I say that buying a used RS6 privately and owning for the next year will depreciate less than if you were to buy a brand new high-spec petrol Vectra, Mondeo, Passat, etc etc etc.

RS6's are seriously good value for money in my totally biased opinion
