Hi Everyone, not sure if anyone can point me in the right direction, had ESP and ABS light on for a while no faults last year for mot but on the drive home lights came on so parked car up and long story short I connected VCDS up and only fault is Faulty steering angle sensor 00778 , so can’t find new part and found second hand part but local garage say best to fit new part but struggling to find new , so question is can I match part numbers with second hand part and fit without problems, garage say there are other numbers on the part are for software so are crucial hence they want to find new part Thanks in advance for any help.

What is the exact fault you had, and what is the part number of the sensor you currently have?

OK, that's the part number that I found. As far as I know, all the parts with the same part number are interchangeable. I found this on eBay:

They accept returns so you could always nab it and return it if it doesn't work for you.

I would first remove your own unit and clean it out with compressed air. The angle sensor itself is pretty robust and it's unusual for it to break, but it can get gunked up or dirty. Ideally you'd strip it and clean the emitter and receiver inside, but I don't know how easily that particular model opens.

Before removing, make sure your wheels are dead straight. Then, when you remove the unit, mark the position of the ring with respect to the body, just in case.Once you've cleaned it, put it back in the same position, without having moved the steering wheel.

You'll almost certainly have to recalibrate it, but before that, check the reading it's giving and how it evolves when you turn the front wheels. You will want your car up on stands at the front for this or you'll stress your power steering. It should read 0.0 when the wheel is straight ahead.

If it seems OK, then calibrate the sensor. While the car is still in the air, turn the wheel from lock to lock to see if the fault occurs at a certain angle. You can do the same while watching the output from the sensor, too.

Ok great, was definitely thinking about taking it of first and giving it a clean with air and as you say get the part as well .

Tricky times ahead as the 6 gets older and little or no parts available.
Took my kids to school the other day in the 6 and both of them had a wee smile getting in and missed the days it was out on the road most days now it’s once in a blue moon.

If you do end up using a new sensor, I'd be interested in doing an autopsy on the old one.
