Coolant leak from radiator or oil cooler

Post by Swan » Sun Aug 06, 2023 9:23 am

Hello again. After some more advice please. There is some pink staining on my radiator so I have definitely got a small leak.

There’s also a fair bit of corrosion on the union with the gearbox oil cooler. I can’t tell if there’s also a leak from the cooler but I wouldn’t be surprised as it’s all the same age.

Do you think I should replace both the radiator and the cooler and the cooler lines in one go?

I can source used parts but is there anyone doing new units? Audi aren’t making them anymore 😵💫 has anyone else done the same job and come across any issues?

Thanks

Andrew

Hi.
I have just done my radiator, cooler, fans and hoses.
All new parts from Audi tradition and RS Carparts.
Thankfully they were still available.
With the age of the cars I took the opportunity to fit new rather than second hand parts. Second hand parts imo are ok for a short fix.
And you probably don’t know how old the second hand parts are.
I wanted a fix for long term as I intend keeping the car.
Personally I am buying new parts while you can still get them.

Ah that’s great. I will have a look at those websites tonight.

Might as well do the cam belt etc while it’s all off too

Many thanks. Coming from BMW ownership and I’m New to the car / Audi so having to learn from scratch. This forum has been very helpful.

Thanks!

Andrew

Yes mate. There is a lot of great people on this forum,
And a great amount of knowledge on the RS6 C5 that they are very willing to share.

Ps if your doing the cambelt do the water pump as well.
IIRC there is also a additional roller that doesn’t come in the kit.
Cannot for the life of me remember who told me that.

Also be aware that there are two types of radiator.

By the way. Whereabouts are you located.

This might help.
My car has a separate gearbox oil cooler which sits below the radiator.

The rad came from Audi tradition
Hoses from RS Components.

Great thanks. Do some cars not have a separate gear box oil cooler?

I believe Some cars have a integrated gearbox oil cooler within the radiator.
They have additional connections for this purpose. Thankfully my rad was the cheaper of the two options.
The rad with integral gearbox cooler is much more expensive.

I’m based in Hastings, East Sussex. Any decent specialist garages you know down here? I’m currently using a VAG specialist in Pevensey

http://camspeconline.com/ there used to be an ex Audi MasterTech there called Stuart, but I believe he has moved on and possibly set up on his sown somewhere. He was brilliant, knew my RS6 like the back of his hand.

As I've been living in Ireland for a few years now I can't vouch for either recently, but they both did have a good reputation and they are close to you.

FYI pro alloy can make you an alloy rad for these cars. With or without the intergraded gearbox oil cooler.
