Hi All,

Just a thread to document the work and hopefully some fun driving of my 2003 RS6.

I bought it a few months ago off a nice guy down Chichester way. I think it was previously owned by a forum member:

Needs a few bits doing to it, some of the work I am happy doing myself, more indepth stuff I will have to pay to have done.
Currently a sticking rear right caliper turned out to most likely be cased by a super loose wheel bearing, not sure how it was not howling with the amount of play it had. I suspect that the bolt was not torqued properly/or the original was not replaced with a new bolt and has stretched. While I was in there all the rear bushings were looking decidedly past their best and will need to be replaced.....you know how it is.

I also have an issue with the ABS and ESP warning lights coming on all the time. The diagnostics said it was the rear left sensor. I initially made some jumper leads to cross connect them under the seats to see if the fault swapped sides. It did. I replaced the sensor but the 2 warning lights are still on all the time. I checked the live outputs from all 4 ABS sensors and am getting the same speed readings from all 4, so I think the fault is not with the sensor but something else. To be continued

What's the exact fault you are getting? Could be some dodgy wiring. Usually ABS DTCs turn out to be the ABS controller, but it's weird that your fault swapped sides if that's the case. What's the fault code you are getting since you put the new sensor in? Also, what sensor did you buy and from where?

Bad mixture due to air leak will put the ABS lights on, too, without storing a fault code.

-01119:035 - GEAR RECOGNITION SIGNAL

-00290:030 - LEFT REAR ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR - OPEN CIRCUIT/SHORT CIRCUIT TO B+

The original sensor was an OEM one, I replaced it with a cheap one as I wasnt sure the sensor was faulty. But the fault code is the same with both sensors.

So the engine codes for it running too lean could cause ABS and ESP fault codes?

I have access to 2 known working MAFs which I will fit and see if they sort the issues out....

Sadly I can’t offer any advice regarding faults. I’m happy to have a pop at working on my car but reading faults and understanding what they mean is way beyond my abilities.

That car looks nice. I don’t recognise it though, which is odd as Chichester is part of my stomping ground.

I'm actually based up near Ross-on-Wye, so not local to Chichester. The previous owner was part of the goodwood members club, I think he took the car to some of their meets. But he didnt have the car for that long...

And when you swapped the sides it said RIGHT REAR ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSOR?

Yes, with the jumper wires fitted, the fault moved from one side to the other.

So the LH sensor was connected to the RH car harness, and the RH sensor to the LH car harness.

Which to me suggested it was a sensor fault rather than a module fault....

Must be the sensor then. Can't see any other explanation.

With the new sensor fitted, the live readings for all 4 were the same.
I cleared the codes, but comes back as soon as the car starts moving

Try the swap test again.

Not having any joy attaching photos of the read out....try again

I'm away with work for a month. Will dig into it some more when I'm back.

I have read that faulty brake light switch can cause issues too. The lights turn on when the pedal is pressed. But have a new one on its way

It won't cause these issues.

When I'm back I'll bridge across again with the new sensor and see if the fault moves again
