New members gearbox dilemma

Post by Captain Cowpat » Sun Sep 18, 2022 11:04 am

Morning. Can’t remember my old username when I tried to log on. Was so long ago. B5 days I think. In the mean time I’ve had a business start up, divorce and several house moves a new C5, B7, B8 and that was before I moved back to the UK. Enough of my bio from Tinder, I suppose you want to share in the joys of my newly acquired ZF5HP24A? It comes already installed in a 2003 C5 Avant totalling 115k. Wasn’t going to. Seen it for sale for absolutely ages. Kept dropping in price every time I looked at it. Part service history. ATF changed three times. Strainer once. One time by franchise dealer. However, getting P0741 code coming to visit, I thought I would have a look around at gear box health issues. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not expert by any means and I’ve got no experience when it comes to auto boxes, but Jesus, why don’t ‘ auto trans workshops’ in the UK want to try to ‘better’ these boxes?? Rang a few and they are more than happy to take between £2.5 to £3k off you for a ‘refurb’. That’s with gearbox out and delivered. Only have to trawl the web to find US workshop’s supplying various kit to upgrade the things which seem to be addressing the problems that is shortening these gearboxes lifespans. Very annoying. Seems companies here just want to bang another one in and wait till you want another?!

As usual, past threads on this forum have been utterly invaluable and shed real light on this problem which seems to blight us all. So far, after speaking to an extremely knowledgeable gentleman from Level 10 in the US, I’m pretty certain I will send over the valve body for upgrading and will purchase their rebuild kit also. Anyone used these guys? From what I’ve seen they seem to be the ones who know these boxes inside out?

Symptoms? Other than the error code just a slight hesitation after gear is selected. I’m keeping the car. Most definitely will see me out so looking to just put her back to health.

Try This Guys
http://www.autotransuk.com/

Best to call Radek(owner) - he had RS6 C5 himself and obviously was working on his own box. Ask him for upgrading, I'm sure he can suggest few things. Also he prefers to have the car onsite and do the work(box out/in) himself.

That’s great, many thanks Viper. Will have a chat this week with him and see what’s said. I’m just not wanting to keep throwing money at a problem which shouldn’t really exist. Engine is well on its way to coming out, so able to drop the box off to whoever. Thanks again.

Will be interested in what he has to say. I tried contacting them and got nowhere. Granted I didn't call, but I left emails with their contact page with my interest and thought given their lack of response they didn't fancy the work anymore.

He doesn't do well with emails. He keeps telling me it's best to call him. I think he might have issues accessing the company email/page - He wanted me to update the website but no details of the account to the domain/admin site.
