How to install a new engine ECU

OK, so I have bought a spare (used) engine ECU Part No: 4D1 907 558. I wanted to grab one while they were still available at a reasonably affordable price to keep as a spare and also to have a play with.

So, how can I go about programming it to actually work on my car? I know that the ECU IMMO will either need deleted or the ECU set in a virgin state that will allow it to work with the current IMMO equipment on the car, but what else would need to be done? Does it have to be linked to the Transmission ECU?

In the past I have grabbed IMMO codes from various VAG cars to program new keys but that is about it. I have VAG Commander, a genuine Ross tech cable and a few other cheapo cables. Is there any sort of step by step guide of how to connect this ECU to my car DIY, or can someone on the forum offer this service through the post? Initially I just want to get it ready to swap it in in the future if required.

Sounds like you've got all the tools you need.

The instructions in Elsawin are pretty good and these complement them:

Look also at the immobilizer III programming section in Elsa.

If that doesn’t answer it all for you, it’s also worth reading up at http://nefariousmotorsports.com/forum/

Anything that isn’t covered by elsawin or Ross tech is likely there. It’s the site I used to hep me reprogram my ecu.

Superb, thanks very much. I'm going to give this all a read when I get home tonight. Cheers!

Start simple with the linkies ben gave you. If that answers it all for you, then great. But the nef moto stuff takes it all to the next level, if required.

Sounds good to me!

FWIW, I also got a spare ecu for the same reason, and I've never seen any immo protection in the ecu per se (there's definitely an immo protection in the Dashboard though).

you basically have to grab the eeprom and flash data from the old ecu and write both of those to the new ecu which would keep the immo and software all the same and wont require any key programming etc

hello friend you have to synchronize the ecu with the counter it will recover all the information alone, the VCDS notice is not very clear at a given moment I am sharing my tutorial with you I had a lot of battle and doubted the ECU ^0

Very interesting, thank you for sharing. I've not found the time to do this swap yet but will definitely use your info when attempting this! Thanks

If your good with a solder station it's easy to remove the Eprom from the ECU and down load its contents. Just need an eprom reader/programmer to read the chip I use a william programmer. I did the same with the chip that holds the tune file. I than wrote the eprom file to a new chip and fitted it to the spare computer. Did the same with the tune file. No boot mode needed this way. It's just another way of cloning the ECU.
