intercooler options?

Post by ian_rs6avant » Fri Jan 31, 2020 7:45 pm

woth mostvparts sourced in currenty researching intercooler options,

from my searching there seems 3 options?

standard done by airtec with a 10%better modern core.

Wagner's look nice but expensive.

or seen some kwe? cant seem to find much feedback about these.

or sack the lot of and do a front mount?

opinions or experience of these welcome I am aiming for 600bhp or maybe a tad more.

Waggies are tried and tested , they offer a larger core and a lot more heat exchange . They are expensive but if you don’t want the carbon shrouds then they can be a little cheaper .

There’s a few places that offer a recore option but offer not a lot of gains to be had over a stock set up even with a newer style core and more surface area .

Front mount isnt that easy to achieve with stock components in place and if not done right then may actually see a rise in engine and air temps .

Another option too look at is possibly a water to air set up ? Though they do have more parts and failure points like water pipes etc . Also they can heat soak themselves too . I’m currently working on a hybrid system that will hopefully prove quite effective

Aiming for over 600 I'd be looking big front mount and relocate the oil and probably a trans cooler to to oe intercooler positions.

I had Wagner size cores made up by pace products and had a local guy weld them into my end tanks which I extended with sheet metal. Done again I'd probably buy Wagners, pace were not good to deal with, first set of cores were the wrong size and their communication when they screwed up was shockingly bad. I've since dealt with Serck Motorsport for some custom rads, they do what they say they will in the timeframe they give for sensible money.

trans cooler is gone as I'm putting a manual box in, I'm leaning towards just getting the Wagner's but hoping some one can shed some light on the kwe ones

Go hunting in the B5 RS4 areas on active forums for KWE info and opinions. In the big scheme, wagners aren't that big an investment for what they do, I'd just do it and get on with life rather than get an ulcer over a pretty insignificant problem with a defined solution. You'll find a thousand problems more deserving of your time and effort.

There has been some moaning about the fit of Wagners. Is it a real issue?

The moaning seems to be about the shrouds rather than the IC themselves. Certainly mine went on nicely.

I bought without the CF shrouds.

No. I modified the OE ones. Simple modification.

Wagner only seem to sell them with the shrouds. Seems a shame to have to buy them and then bin them.

I'm not convinced the Wagner shrouds are an upgrade. they are making the bumper opening bigger, when the intercooler face is the same size. The bumper opening where the air enters should be smaller than the face of the intercooler for best effect, even more so for a deeper core which needs more pressure difference to get the air to flow through effectively. That aspect of the design strikes me as a bit naff compared to OE.

In the grand scheme of things, for what you get in the Wagner kit it’s actually not bad value for money.
Put it into perspective, my Forge front mount for my old Mk4 Golf was £900..you only get one of those and some pipes.
The Wagners work out at £650 a side and that includes the CF shrouds.
The coolers and pipework themselves fitted very well, however the shrouds needed a bit of ‘trimming’ with a pair of sharp scissors to get the bumper to fit.
Once on, driving the car, it was noticeably more responsive with them on, with seemingly more pull through the midrange.
I’d defo recommend them.
