Primary oil cooler failure

Post by Top cat » Fri Oct 18, 2019 6:26 pm

Hi all

On the C5 2003

Does anyone know for sure if the small primary oil cooler located on the side of the block can be accessed for removal with the engine still in.

Thanks
TC

If you mean the one where the Bufkin pipe goes then yes but it is a fiddle.

Thank you Bilco1. I can see a chink of light at the end of the tunnel. Yes it’s that one. I really don’t want to have the engine pulled for this tiny part. do you know of any links that will have the procedure for getting to it

Unit 20 changed mine a few years back took Martin a few hours but engine definitely stayed in. Just make sure you use a good quality hex socket as if you round any of the socket head bolts you will then have to take the engine out. Also use new bolts when putting back together.

Yea, please make sure the hex is uber good quality. I ended up stripping mine and was forced to pull the engine out.

Next thing I knew i had a manual transmission in the car...

Thanks for your input guys
Message received and understood about the hex socket am I right that it’s 8mm?
Regarding the new bolts will I have to get them from an Audi dealer or is there an alternative

I have ordered the Bufkin pipe from James Bufkin in USA which I believe hopefully comes with all new seals

Yes, it does. IIRC a pair of viton seals on each end, along with the pipe itself being a nicely machined bit of aluminium.
