Indicator issue.....

Post by Mark-RS » Fri Jul 12, 2019 3:57 pm

My indicators are fluttering ! That's if they even work at all. I can hear the relay clicking away like made whilst fluttering, or it just stops totally, which means no indicators.

This is a bad thing...

But in the grand scheme of RS repairs... I guess it's a good thing !

After a bit og googling I came accross a thread mentioning the relay and hazard switch as the culprit and that swapping it out would solve my problem.

My question though....

Just a regular C5 switch will do right ?

Like this one...

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-AUDI ... Sw7sJdHOwt

They all do the same thing. Also wondering if Audi would do this still ? As the thread I was reading said it was only 40 notes brand new from them, but the post was from 2014. Is it worth me ringing them ? Or just buying one from eBay ASAP, as no indicators is kinda dangerous.

But then again, hardly anyone uses them these days..... :<beep>_you:

Hazard switch. I bought one for a golf recently for 5 quid on Amazon. Works perfectly.

I've got a feeling that I fixed the one I replaced on the RS6 (a number of years ago now) by opening it and cleaning up the contacts. I can't remember exactly what I did, but I remember being surprised how rustic it is inside. It wasn't the relays that had failed. Perhaps the PCB was held onto the pins with pressure connectors or something. Or maybe I re-soldered it. Dunno, but I remember that it was easy to fix.

I think the thread I found also mentioned about puling apart and cleaning and resoldering something, I'll certainly do it when I get it out, but wanted a replacement to be on the safe side.

Indicators have pretty much stopped working as of today. I get one flash and then nothing.... :-(

You can replace the relays inside I think, to fix the problem, it’s on the net somewhere.

I'd be surprised if it was a relay fault and probably more of a contact fault . Not taken one too bits mind . I've got that too come at some point no doubt

Replaced and it works like a charm now. Hardest part was trying to get the damned trim back on afterwards !

The one I bought had 10 pins on it ! I was a little shocked that when I removed the one from the car it only had 9 pins ! But either way it works. No idea what the other pin may/may not have been used for.

As for the unit itself, I think the relay is ok as the hazards works without fault, it's only the indicators. Maybe one day I will pull it apart and have a look....

Just taken apart the switch I replaced the other day: There's nothing electronic in there at all, just mechanical contacts. A good clean and some conducting lube and it should be good as new. :)

Just had another look at the switch assembly. Contrary to what I said earlier, there is a PCB and relay behind the button. It's quite easy to get it out. Once you've pulled the contacts part of the switch off by prising up the tabs, remove the metal tangs by pushing down the plastic retaining tab and sliding them out. Hidden under those tangs are another couple of plastic tabs holding the pcb and remaining switch assembly in. Lift these out and then push the innards out towards the button. It all comes out.

I don's see any obvious problems on mine. I suspect the issue might still be the contacts, rather than the relay or PCB. There's a slightly dodgy looking solder joint that I'll redo. All good fun.
