This is going to hurt

So, the Audi specialist Audi 4U in Bridgwater have my car in pieces after it broke down last year with a Camshaft sensor fault.

Only after replacing that and the ECU we discovered it wasn’t that and was likely to be mechanical.

So it was diagnosed a few weeks ago with a lack of compression on Bank2?. However it wasn’t known where the problem lay as it was a company that specialised in Technical aspects of diagnosis (ecu, sensors, starter load etc)

So now the proper guys have it. Inlet camshaft won’t move. Timing - belt is fine, so it’s likely it’s the chain tensioner or something that’s gone. What damage is it likely to have done? And what’s it going to cost me.

My bank balance isn’t what it once was (don’t ever trust family not to screw you over - legal costs have wiped me out)

I’m in a real predicament as money isn’t great at the mo.

MI’ve got to pull my engine as my cam chain tensioner pad broke up bent the chain and skipped a tooth and I have no compression on cylinder 6 so I think I’ve got a bent valve or a bit of pad stuck down there-rough cost of the parts just to take the head off and back on again is about £250 going by the quote I had from TPS and if it’s a bent valve then to get the head sorted I’m getting quotes from £150 up to £400

Sounds like you might have dropped a valve or something is has come lose and it jamming

Hard for me to understand why there saying it’s down on compression when you can’t turn the camshaft to check??

What was the mileage of the engine out of interest?

Well update: the Audi specialist who has it now has done a compression test and there’s no compression in bank2.
This afternoon the rocker cover was being taken off to see what the state of play is - and how much it’s going to cost me.

Hope it’s not too catastrophic.

There are a couple of engines on eBay at the moment with reasonable mileage advertised, may be cheaper just to switch the lump?

I have looked at them. If I had the space to take mine out myself and fit another one, then I would, as I’m not experienced doing the head, but I haven’t. Plus the cheapest, although local to me is £1500, which won’t be too far off what I’ll be paying to have mine done + it sounds like it needs a chain tensioner too.

Sooo, chain tensioner pad was found broken up. 4 valves are bent.

So now having to scrimp and save for the rebuild.

I had exactly the same thing mate! Valves are £136 for 4 and machine Shop is charging me £180 to sort the head-gaskets etc are £340 and tensioner is £500ish off the top of my head

Ouch.

I’ve asked for a more comprehensive breakdown as £430 for ‘genuine’ parts is a bit vague, I’ve also asked why it’s had a service as unless the plugs were damaged, they were only fitted 1800 miles before, as was the filters. Plus I am at a loss to how the head has cost £1245+vat when there was a recon one on egay for under £700. Why did I need 2 cams, I wasn’t told of any cam damage.

Feel very disheartened right now, as I had said I was on a budget. I’ve lost 3 very costly court cases over my family home and am financially drained. This was like: let’s see what we can do. I’m also stunned at the cost of the battery. 2 years ago my last battery cost £125. it’s like no expense spared kind of thing.
I don’t have the cash atm, I said no rush, and it was done before I could think.

And I supplied the cam belt kit, water pump, aux belt and bufkin pipe (which they didn’t replace by the sounds of it)

Did they tell you their labour rate was going up? If not I'd argue they ought to charge you the old rate as the job started before.
