Gearbox thread
Hi Everyone,
I have been trying to find the gearbox thread on here where everyone who has broken a gearbox registers
the mileage and mods on their RS6's.
I have tried key word searches etc and it doesn't come up.
Can anyone help please?
Cheers.

Probably not very relevant any more.

In that all the ones that were OK are now broken?

More that people are less likely to know the history of their cars.

Re: Gearbox thread
Thanks Nobby.
Mine has gone I think.
It's on limp mode by the feel of things after missus reported
violent down shifts on relaxed king distance 85mph motorway trip.
It's booked in with Grizz to assess.
My car is a keeper so I'll do whatever he suggests.
Are there any T/C or gearbox mods the group here can recommend in the abscence of 517 transmission providing proper service?
Also, having read the old gearbox thread, Shoppininit; are you STILL on the original gearbox?
Cheers

Re: Gearbox thread
Yup. My gearbox is smooth as silk (touch wood).
If I were to have trouble with the gearbox I believe that I would buy the Level 10 repair / reinforce kit and either get someone to fit it or do it myself. Such a faff removing the gearbox though.
Failing that, I would source a ZF remanufactured box, preferably with a discount, and have that fitted.
I wonder what Audi are charging for a box these days. If you can get a discount on one, then you'll get the 2 year warranty which is of some comfort. Still a ZF reman box, but with extra warranty.

Re: Gearbox thread
What is the level 10 kit?
I'm interested to know.
I will ask Grizz to contact Audi and price a new box before ordering a recon.

Re: Gearbox thread
I'd think with any gearbox issues you change the fluid & filter, check for leaks and then replace the transmission range sensor first before deciding the box is terminally knackered. The switch going gives exact symptoms of a failing box - awkward shifts, dithering, clunking and slipping feeling kind of shifts. Mine didn't warn me it was on its way out until recently. I think it's actually been dodgy for a while. Change the sensor and it's perfect. It's back to being telepathic.

Re: Gearbox thread
Might be wrong on this but changing the MAFs really helped my shifts. I had other symptoms which led me to replace them (ESP light coming on, lurching etc) but I believe they are used for working out the engine load calculation, which I am guessing is then used on calculating the shift characteristics. You can tell how old the MAFs are as they nicely have the date stamped on them. Mine were original and on 96k.

There's also place called http://getriebeklinik.com/ who seem to do good business tinkering with our cars.
Can't remember who used them, but the link was on here originally - I also follow them on Facebook and they do a few ZF gearbox rebuilds.
They are in Germany though. Sprechen sie Deutsch?

Only 500 miles from London... Stick the car on a trailer and take it there. Enjoy some nice Bratwurst while they are doing it. At least you can test it before driving home.
Think I'd rather do that than send a box to the USA and pray.
