Electrical problem

Post by gedRS » Sat Jan 21, 2017 11:39 am

Got problem and i need your advice.
Lost all electrics yesterday, a gradual decline over a few miles, battery light on, lost every electrical thing in the car, then into limp mode eventually ending up on the side of the road....I did have an issue with the big fuse a while back, the 200amp one, it was under water once drained it was ok so never looked again. Question is do you think thats the issue or does it point towards alternator ? If it is the alternator which i suspect how big a job is it by RS6 standards ? After 11 years of ownership i should know the answer to that question already.

Ever had a new battery ? Just had a Polo's electrics die over night, no symptoms the day before, assumed a direct drain somewhere, put new battery on, no issues since

What did you observe from the dash battery guage, whilst the symptoms were occurring? Solid 14V or steady decline?

To be honest i didn't really notice any decline but we put another fully charged battery on to get me home and the battery light was still all the way home on and it did decline a little on the 20min journey, not sure if thats a clue but i guess it points to alternator...?

Check your getting a good charging voltage with the car running using a multimeter in the battery . If your only getting 12v or less I would suspect its the alt at fault though check the fuse under the header tank and make sure the connections are clean and you have good connections and voltage flowing though it .
