Alternator time

Post by mavada » Sat Jan 14, 2017 10:38 am

Hi all,

Now using the 6 as a daily driver, the battery light and voltage drop (as shown in the pic) issue is seen while driving.
I thought it was because of a bad battery and replaced that some years ago, but now the car isnt connected to the battery charger/conditioner at night, it looks like the Alternator is the culprit.

Will have a look to take it out and see if i can just replace some bits and pecies or order a New one....

You can buy a voltage regulator which includes the brushes. Don't forget to check the connections on the bulkhead under the expansion tank.

Rule 42: confirmed.

This is the fuse:

But it's unlikely to be that in your case because your car has been garaged for years, hasn't it?

Most likely the regulator.

Don't think the RS6 alternator has a viscous pulley does it? I replaced an alternator on a Golf 4 recently where the viscous pulley had hari-kari'd. The rest of the alternator was fine.

Thanks guys for the info.
How do i loosen the tension on the belt? Think somewhere above the alternator, easy accessible?

The tensioner is spring loaded, kinda middle of the engine. Have a look at the cambelt guide. Big spanner and twist it then pop the belt off.

This.

It's not too bad to do, just awkward.
